Power boats
A powerboat is any subclass of boat that is operated by a motorized engine, either inboard or outboard. Sometimes referred to as motor boats, motor yachts, or superyachts (ranging from 24 meters/79 feet), powerboats include any number of yachts, cruisers, console boats, fishing boats, and other boat styles, and have been around since the creation of the marine engine. There are even some sailboats that can be considered powerboats because of their use of motorized engines in certain conditions or situations. Other types of powerboats include deck boats, flats boats, pontoons, skiffs, sportfishing boats, houseboats, and bowriders.
How are Powerboats built?
Modern powerboats are typically made of fiberglass resin or composite finish, which is usually a molded design (although they are increasingly being made of carbon-fiber composite materials). Powerboats are often mass-produced, so efficiency in production is a must. There are also models available that are custom-designed and built, as well as specialty, collectible power boats constructed from premium marine wood. Some powerboats designed for shallow water or certain types of fishing, such as skiffs and flats boats, may be made from lightweight molded aluminum.
Types of Engines
Powerboats can be operated with a variety of types of engines and motors. There are both inboard and outboard options, and some models include dual, triple, or quad engines (even quintuple or sextuple on some high-performance models). Smaller vessels may use jet propulsion (especially wake boats), powered by a water pump. There are also trolling motors available for shallow water navigation, primarily used in fishing powerboats. More recently, some have electric outboards, such as Torqeedo outboards.
Optional Equipment for Powerboats
Power boats can be outfitted with a variety of premium and optional equipment. Radar systems, navigation and GPS, power socket converters for USB charging, upgraded seating and cabin equipment, and everything that you could imagine is available. These boats are typically outfitted with upgraded technology, while power cruisers designed for performance will have performance hulls and dual racing engines, in most cases. Fishing powerboats will offer livewells, coolers, and built-in rod holders, as well as other fishing equipment and gear.
