Hatteras GT70 Video: Quick Tour

The 2015 Hatteras GT70 is one fishing boat that can crush the competition—literally. This is one big convertible, which is built with big luxury and big fishability both in mind. While sloppy weather can keep many anglers in port and off the water during tournaments, those involved in big-money billfish competition need to be able to head out to the fishing grounds pretty much whenever they want, even when it’s nasty.

Oh, and getting there fast is key, too. The Hatteras GT70 is one particular sportfishing boat that’s built around that “getting to the big ones first” philosophy. Take a peek and see for yourself.

Yes, that interior decor is shockingly luxurious. You saw how massive the cockpit is on this fishing yacht. And absolutely, the GT70 lives up to Hatteras’s over-40-knot claim. (Heck, cruising speed is in the mid-30s). That’s even more amazing when you consider that this boat tips the scales at 120,000 pounds and carries 2,000 gallons of fuel.

How does Hatteras make it happen? Though 120,000 pounds sounds like a lot, it isn’t when you’re talking about a 70 foot sportfishing yacht. Hatteras builds this boat with vacuum-infusion for an ideal resin-to-fiberglass ratio, maximizing the strength while minimizing the weight. In fact, this model’s predecessor, the Hatteras 68 Convertible, weighed a full 20,000 pounds more than the GT70.

We couldn’t take the GT70 off the dock at the Fort Lauderdale boat show, where we filmed this Quick Tour, and that’s a shame. But we did get a ride on the last iteration of the GT series, the 63; you can learn more about that model by reading Hatteras 63 GT Enclosed Flying Bridge: Thunder Struck. And you can read more in-depth information about the 70 GT on boats.com, in the review Hatteras 70 GT Convertible:  Sportfishing Dream.
