Boat Details
Description
Tartan's reputation for solid construction and good workmanship apparent in this well-maintained boat. As with most Tartan designs, the quality and finish of the 3100 is a cut above other of it's size and design from the period. Beautiful teak bulkheads, furniture, nav station, cabinets, toe rail and grab rails. Nice balance between performance sailing and cruising comfort.
Komokwa is a well-equipped and clean example of the Tartan 3100 — a performance cruiser with classic lines, rich interior woodwork, and quality deck hardware. With updated interior soft goods, essential electronics including VHF and stereo, a Force 10 propane range, and a well-maintained fin keel/spade rudder hull form, she's an ideal Great Lakes cruiser for a couple or small family. Engine hours are low for her age (~534), and her rigging and topsides appear to be in excellent condition. She’s clean, dry, and ready for spring launch. Please note: the owners comments below are from the owners who had Komokwa from 2000 to 2022.

Manufacturer Provided Description
The Tartan 3100 is designed to carry on the Tartan tradition of excellence in sailing performance, whether racing or cruising and to withstand off-shore conditions. We then looked for proven and innovative ways to maximize comfort and luxury within her 31-foot hull. The hull form carries fullness to the ends; her sections are U-shaped with a firm turn at the bilge. The result is excellent stability, low wetted surface and powerful sailing lines. Her design points to a hull with good behavior and performance throughout a wide range of wind and wave conditions. Two keel plans are offered: a deep elliptical fin and a shoal-draft beaver tail bulb which has proven successful and popular among cruising owners of other Tartan models. The proper size of the subtly elliptical rudder underscores Tartan's commitment to control. Ballast is carried low; this, together with a high ballast-displacement ratio, allows Tartan 3100 to comfortably carry a powerful sail plan. Tartan 3100 has a tall double-spreader masthead rig. The large mainsail ensures good reaching and off-wind performance; the high-aspect foretriangle and close sheeting-angles ensure efficient headsails and strong windward performance. While the deck styling is sleek and modern, the emphasis has been placed on function and safety. All sail controls are led aft to housetop-mounted winches. So, too, are the 4-part cabin-top mainsheet traveler controls. The cockpit is T-shaped; seats are contoured for comfort under sail and at anchor. Tartan 3100's large foredeck, wide sidedecks, comfortable cockpit and well-planned layout provide safety and pleasure to the sailing experience. The interior was designed with offshore sailing in mind, yet is contemporary in style. Angled bulkheads and cabin furniture in hand-rubbed teak provide an openness and a luxurious look without omitting necessary features. The U-shaped galley, for security in a seaway, wraps an area to starboard at the foot of the companionway with a large and well-insulated ice box, two-burner gimballed propane stove with oven, storage trap and deep stainless steel sink. Interior cabinetry and trim is hand-oiled teak lumber and ply or pressure laminates. Ventilation is provided in nine opening port lights, three overhead hatches and two dorades.

Additional Information
Owners Comments:
Komokwa is “Chief of the Sea” in the mythology of the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest (where one of the owners grew up). Komokwa’s under-sea lair is guarded by killer whale, whose dorsal fin and flukes can be seen in the graphic next to the boat’s name. (For those familiar with Chicago’s Lincoln Park, Komokwa can be seen as the bottom figure of the totem pole located in the park at Addison Street. Killer Whale is the next figure above Komokwa.)
We’ve owned Komokwa for over 20 years, sailing her out of Chicago’s Montrose Harbor, primarily on day sails. She came to us, as the second owners, in great condition. We’ve tried hard to maintain that tradition, with regular maintenance by Crowley’s Yacht Yard, including scheduled mast unstepping and inspection, yearly bottom painting and teak maintenance by owners, and close attention to any needed mechanical repairs. We’ve become accustomed to other boaters commenting on the handsome beauty of our always-sparkling boat.
Tartans are sailboats for those who want a vessel that balances classic design and performance. It’s a well-constructed, beautifully designed boat with lots of below-deck teak and storage. (Don’t just take our word for it, read the reviews in Practical Sailor and SpinSheet). Tartan’s are not mass-produced; we are hull number 143. The production of the 3100 was discontinued in 1999, so these are “limited edition” boats. Prior to purchasing Komokwa, we owned a Tartan 3000 for 10 years, demonstrating our attachment to the brand.
We’re retirees now, and between travel and family obligations, sailing is no longer the centerpiece of our lives. It’s time to turn Komokwa over to the next generation of caring owners.
