Catamaran boats
A sailing catamaran is a multihull vessel that is characterized by having two separate hulls, which are generally similar or identical in size. Because of their dual-hull design, they offer more space and will lay on the water like a raft, for less heeling when enjoying sailing on the open waters. These boats were originally crafted in the South Pacific as a way to navigate the shallow waters with increased stability, for transporting passengers and goods between various islands. They became popular for sailing in the 1960s and 70s and are now one of the most common sailing vessels available.
How are Sailing Catamarans built?
Sailing catamarans are designed with two hulls that are connected by lateral beams. The hulls are typically designed with a shallow draft and flatter bottom than other boats due to its original use in short water. Sailing catamarans will also include rigging and sails, which can be custom designed or chosen from a number of pre-designed systems that include one or multiple masts. While the original catamarans were made of wood and premium marine wood models are still popular, there is also a growing selection of fiberglass and composite catamarans that are being produced today.
What Types of Engines Power Sailing Catamarans?
As this vessel is designed for sailing, it will primarily be outfitted with a premium rigging and sail system that is responsible for most of the power generation when you’re out on the water. However, the best catamarans will also have an optional prop or outboard motor that can be used for long hauls or when docking or mooring the boat. Dual engines are generally preferred due to the dual hulls.
What Optional Equipment is Available for Sailing Catamarans?
Sailing catamarans can be outfitted with high-tech navigation and radar systems, fish finders, auxiliary power outlets, generators, and premium rigging systems for better sailing. Models that include a cabin will also find plenty of optional cabin upgrades, including seating, marine appliances and electrics, bedding, and other living space accouterments.
