There are very few yards that enjoy such a global acclaim of building long distance cruisers as Hallberg-Rassy.
An easy-to-handle blue water cruiser with great comfort, the HR 62 is the ultimate world cruiser and was, at the time, the new flagship for HR. She is, without a doubt, one of the most majestic, elegant and powerful voyagers ever built. 25 of these extraordinary yachts were built between 1997 and 2011.
Characteristic for Hallberg-Rassy layouts is that they are all logical, well arranged and intended to work for long periods on board either at sea or in the harbour. The floor in the 62 is the same level throughout the boat. This contributes to easy access to all cabins and no steps or different levels to worry about. The HR 62 has a very light and airy saloon with big opening side windows as well as opening skylights. Sweetie 2 was a trendsetter and one of the first HR 62’s to do a more modern contemporary style interior with a rich, creamy upholstery in the main salon, custom seating, white pleated blinds on all the portlights and Sunbrella shades for the hatches.
As expected on a Hallberg-Rassy, the cockpit is very well protected by both a combination hard windshield with a soft top in place of the normal ‘doghouse’ and a large bimini. The combination dodger with a soft top in place of the standard hard ‘dog-house’ was a requirement of the original owner as he was taller than most. The cockpit is generous in size and offers good all-round visibility. It is well suited for the various demands of difficult climates from rather cold to tropical heat. The cockpit offers good shelter from the dodger with an opening mid-section that works perfectly when it is hot and can be closed in inclement weather. This solution has become synonymous with the modern cruising yacht. Sweetie 2 is wired to go anywhere in the world your heart desires, with 220V and 110V, receptacle on the side and 24V and 12V throughout the boat.
The HR62 Awards
An earlier HR 62 was presented as "Import Cruising Boat of the Year 2006" in the January 2006 issue of Cruising World magazine after her nomination at the Annapolis International Boat Show. In 2005 the same vesselcame in a solid first in the big boat category in the Caribbean 1500. This was followed by a sweep of four first places in her next Caribbean 1500. The HR 62 also won the "Yacht of the Year" award in Germany in the largest class, over 50 ft.
The current owners wanted a boat that would handle deteriorating conditions with confidence, that would be forgiving of their learning curve and that had all the amenities of a floating home. After looking at many top-end builders such as Hylas, Tayana, Valiant, Oyster and Swan, in the end, they decided on this Hallberg-Rassy after comparing specifications from engine size to righting moment. "Hallberg-Rassy was oversized and safe in every category," comments Bill, the current owner. "There's never any fear this boat can't take you where you need to go. She's got a huge engine, a powerful rig, and redundant systems throughout the ship - even dual autopilots".
This is a very unique offering that does not come around often, and she is the only one for resale outside Europe. It is rare enough that a good HR62 comes to the market, then to find one in this condition is extraordinary. Sweetie 2 is in fantastic condition has been constantly updated and kept up to the highest standard. Both previous and current owners have spared no expense to keep her in this exceptional condition since day one. You will be hard pressed to find a more complete and up to date yacht with low hours in turnkey condition. She has everything you can possibly need including a very extensive spare parts inventory for offshore voyages.

Galley
The inline galley on the port side also serves as the walk-through to the aft cabin. The galley comes standard with a deep freezer, top-loading refrigerator and front-loading day fridge. The galley has Corian counters with an integral lip and a Force 10 gas stove with oven.
Large well insulated refrigerator and freezers plus a front opening fridge for day use.
Engine
At the center of the Hallberg-Rassy's systems is its engine room, the envy of any sailor who has had to contort himself around a hot engine. The engine room is well lit and offers plenty access to the engine, filters, pumps, cooling compressors, generator, Mastervolt battery chargers (three), Webasto heating units, hydraulics, master electrical switches, steering gear, water manifold, muffler and other systems. All heads and faucets run on freshwater. With the ability to carry approx. 425 gallons of diesel and approx. 412 gallons of water, the HR 62 is well suited for long offshore voyages or extended cruising along remote coastlines. A powerful engine is an important part of a long-distance cruiser. The Perkins Sabre 225 horsepower diesel with the Gori folding propeller positioned to overdrive, is reputed to deliver a speed of 7.5 knots at a fuel-efficient 1,500 rpms and at 2,200 rpms and pitched for regular ahead, she will reputedly do 10 knots.
The two geared three bladed folding propeller with overdrive provides maximum performance under power, an important point which cannot be emphasized enough for extended voyages.
Sails
Rigging
The HR 62 comes standard with a sloop rig and hydraulic cutter stay and running backstays stowed at the mast when not in use. The mast is relatively aft resulting in a large foretriangle and ample room for both forestays.
The HR 62 has a three-spreader aluminum mast and boom by Seldén and rod rigging and turnbuckles by Navtec. The mast is deck-stepped, supported by a solid compression post. The HR 62 comes standard with hydraulic in-mast furling that is easy to operate from the helm. In addition to the main, genoa and cutter staysail furling systems, the outhaul, vang and backstay tensioner are also hydraulic. On Sweetie 2 the cockpit winches are electric.
The main and genoa halyards are cable with detachable lines. The cables hook into special conduits on either side of the mast and can be adjusted with a winch handle. There are two manual winches at the mast for the staysail halyard, UPS halyard and rigging the poles.
It is obvious that a lot of thought went into the placement of fittings about the deck. From the helm, the main, genoa and staysail winches were all within an arm's reach and adjustable at the push of a button. All leads were fair, and you are never for want of another winch or line clutch. The genoa and staysail cars share the same track. The deck cleats are through bolted onto the toe rail.
Deck and Cockpit
The cockpit on the HR 62 is designed to protect the crew on offshore passages while also serving as an extension of the main saloon. This HR 62 comes with a solid windshield and soft top. Instruments above the companionway are easy to read, and the Garmin multifunction display is tucked under the starboard side of the dodger. It is ABSOLUTEL MASSIVE! Placing it here instead of on the pedestal kept the cockpit open and maintained visibility from the helm. All hydraulics are operable from the helm. All sail controls are on the pedestal, as are the controls for the two independent autopilots, windlass, emergency bilge pump, engine control panel and VHF radio.
Handholds run the length of the cabin top and pad eyes to clip harnesses into abound. The lazarette and forepeak are huge and will accept lines, outboard fuel and miscellaneous items.
Great attention has been paid to easy and safe anchoring. Anchor winch motor is placed under deck for protection against water. The anchor chain falls smoothly into the big chain locker, which drains overboard. . Anchor can be controlled both at the windlass and from the steering pedestal. The over-sized anchor and chain add a nice finishing touch to Sweetie 2’s deck appearance.

Construction Details
All Hallberg-Rassys’ are constructed to undertake the rigors of offshore sailing and long-distance cruising. The decks and hulls are hand-laid GRP with a Divinycell closed cell foam core above the waterline for sound and temperature insulation. The hull utilizes isophthalic gelcoat and polyester for increased resistance to water absorption. Below the waterline, the hull is solid laminate. A structural grid is fiber glassed into the bilges, which increases stiffness and distributes the loads of the mast and the keel.
Deck, coach roof, handrails and seats are all solid teak. 15 windows (14 open) 8 deck hatches and 7 Dorade vents. Scuppers drain under the waterline to keep the hull clean.
The insides of the bilges are ground smooth and painted, preventing sharp edges that will cut hands or damage gear stored within. All lockers have false floors and removable backs so that every section of the hull can be accessed. The rudder is semi-balanced, and its skeleton has a solid 100-millimeter stainless steel shaft and is suspended by three roller bearings.
The deck-to-hull joint is fabricated of overlapping laminate, a method that has proven superior in respects to structural soundness and preventing water ingress. The stanchions are mounted on solid stainless-steel rods that rise through the toe rail but do not penetrate the underside, thus eliminating potential leaking. Bulkheads are fiber-glassed to the hull and deck. The engine, generator and all tanks are installed after the interior and deck are finished to ensure that they can be removed if necessary.
Woodwork and joinery are inherently difficult due to a boat's movement. Because joints creak and shift underway, top-end boatbuilders construct wood laminates that they mold into shape. Hallberg-Rassys’ contain few sharp angles and joints. All fiddles and door frames are molded laminates with rounded corners, as is the molded division in the V-berth. In the head and the laundry room, teak doors have floating panels so they won't warp as the wood expands and contracts with moisture.

Designers Comments - Germán Frers
"As the top of the line of high-quality offshore cruising boats produced by this world renowned builder, the Hallberg-Rassy 62 represents years of experience and a synergy of efforts on the part of Hallberg-Rassy and our design office to produce the best possible yacht of its kind.
The high performance, well balanced, strong hull of moderate draft is matched by an efficient and easy to handle sail plan. The areas reserved for leisure on deck are very generous and the interior has plenty of natural light and ventilation. A new owner will immediately be able to appreciate Hallberg-Rassy’s know-how building and fitting out their yachts, as much as their design and performance in all conditions.” Germán Frers
Blue-Water Magazine Quotes
Some Comments from Erin Myers at Bluewater Magazine
When the wind was steady at 25 knots, we easily made better than 200-mile days, as did other boats in our size range. However, we found that when the winds and seas built, we were able to make 220-mile days while our fellow rally participants dropped down to 180-mile days. The HR 62 out shone the rest of the fleet in heavy weather. She maintained her performance and sea kindly motion, keeping the crew well rested and thus alert. It was quiet down below. You could hear the water rushing by the hull, but there was little creaking. We found that we could keep the genoa up until 30 knots, above which the cutter staysail was better suited.
Despite the fact that the boat is built as a top-of-the-range yacht, she can virtually be sailed single handed. Push buttons located at the steering pedestal allow you to raise and lower the anchor or set and sheet the sails. "Push button sailing" is no longer just a symbolic expression!
