Their builds follow these commandments:

• common sense
• easy maintenance
• environmental sustainability
• perfect lines and harmony
Sandy Cay is a very solid build, easy to handle and comfortable sailing yacht, with a design that turns heads. As the genoa, self-tacking staysail and mainsail are all furling and can be operated from the cockpit, she is well designed for short-handed sailing and very safe to sail on open water. With a stern thruster as well as a bow thruster with remote control you can feel at ease sailing and mooring her single-handed.
The interior is well designed, very light and airy, making you feel at home on board from day one. Thanks to the high-set sitting area inside with larger windows you will enjoy the beautiful scenery at anchorages that much more. Sandy Cays also benefits from having a lifting keel with lead torpedo bulb so you can sneak into those shallower anchorages. Her current owners have cared for her for 10 years and are ready to allow someone else to take advantage of this beautiful yet practical, sturdy yet sleek, yacht.

The boat was built in Klaas Boodt in Nijkerk, Netherlands. This shipyard used to be the specialist in the Netherlands for building high quality wood-core yachts, as is Sandy Cay. As this is a labour intensive way of building yachts, with firstly building the hull of wood and thereafter covering this hull with multiple layers of epoxy/polyester, the yacht builder Klaas Boodt had to stop its activities since then.
The hull of Sandy Cay has been built of red cedar planks of about 2.2 meter long by 29 mm X 29 mm. This hull was covered with seven layers of epoxy/polyester (Polyester (with a wooden core))
The Sandy Cay was completed in 2006, at that time named Shukimu. She was built for a German first owner, who sailed her to his home in Greece. In 2012 his skipper sailed her back to the Netherlands. In 2012 the current owner bought the yacht and renamed the her (before launching) Sandy Cay, after a little island in the Caribbean. That was where he wanted to sail to after having seen enough of the European waters.
On average the current owner has spent since then about 6 weeks per year on the Sandy Cay during the 10 years (in total more than a whole year). The first few years he made various trips from his home-marina Muiderzand to the UK, Denmark and France. 2015 -2016 Sandy Cay was in the Baltic Sea and Norway. In 2018 she left for Southern Europe, sailing along the coast with the first winter in Bilbao and two winters in Cadiz with some sailing in the Mediterranean between those last two winters. In September 2021 the owner sailed her (solo) from Gibraltar to Gran Canaria, to participate in November 2021 in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers): starting in Gran Canaria via the Cape Verde to Grenada.
The larger part of 2022 the Sandy Cay was sailed extensively in the Caribbean. In that period most of the Caribbean islands have been visited, including the little island Sandy Cay in front of the island Jost van Dyke. In September 2022 she was returned to Grenada, to shelter for the hurricane season.

Other batteries:
- the bow thruster has its own batteries (6) located in the bow (under the hatch in the floor of the bin at the bow)
- the engine and generator have their own battery for the start engine, both in the technical room under the starboard cockpit hatches.
In 2015 the following changes have been introduced by Shipshape Yachtservice Muiderzand, Netherlands
(i) New navigation equipment, plotters, AIS, radar, folding screw and rigging. Further the hull was painted white (used to be yellow)
(ii) Under guidance of the designer Oliver van Meer two modifications were introduced, to improve the balance with strong winds:
- the weight- of the bulb was increased with about 800kg and
- the rudders were lengthened about 15 cm and placed further to the stern.
In 2021 the Sandy Cay was prepared for the ocean crossing by MH Yacht Preserve in La Linea, Spain / Gibraltar with:
- A complete check-up according to the safety check guidelines of the ARC organisation, including a check of the rigging, lines, engine and generator (decision that that the generator needed renewal. The installation of the new generator was done by Ronautic, La Lalma, Gran Canaria
- Installing the FleetOne satellite communication supplied (with the RedBox for on-board Wi-Fi) by the ARC communication advisor MailaSail, UK
- Installing a new Shenker Zen watermaker and a new Liferaft
