"My wife and I had always dreamed of sailing on the ocean but never imagined it would have transpired when it did. My wife is a registered nurse and I am a retired special forces guy who spent 30 years of service in the Army. Spring of 2020, covid was in full swing and the world was in turmoil so what did we do? We bought our dream boat! We were both excited beyond measure. We researched the best blue water boats with the most circumnavigational events on the market and came to love the Beneteau Oceanis 473. This came not only from the design of the boat, but also from its stability on the open ocean and its seaworthiness. We were and still are convinced this is the best sailboat we could have ever owned. We bought the boat in Oxnard, California from a couple that had the same dreams as us. We finalized the sale of Vahalla and sailed her north the 650 nautical miles from Oxnard, California to Charleston, Oregon where she was maintained for over a year as we prepared to sail her south to Mexico.
Over the course of a year, we honed our skills and made appropriate upgrades for open ocean sailing. On September 30, 2021 we set sail for San Diego, California for the start of the “2021 Baja Ha Ha”, from Charleston, Oregon with my brother and his wife on their sailboat. Over the next three weeks we experienced the dramatic beauty and landscape of the west coast of the United States as we made our way south to San Diego. We sailed Vahalla with a fleet of over 150 sailboats on November 1, 2021 to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and arrived on November 11, 2021.
The adventure down to Cabo was one that my wife and I will never forget. The camaraderie of the crews and the beauty of the sea and Baja peninsula is something both of us will cherish for a lifetime. Once we reached Cabo, and reprovisioned, we set sail for La Paz, Mexico. We arrived and realized this would be our jump off point to many beautiful places in the Sea of Cortez. After sailing around the beautiful islands, snorkeling, diving, and exploring over the winter, we headed north to Loreto where we anchored for a week in preparation for our voyage across the Sea of Cortez. We left Puerto Escondido, on a beautiful sunny morning and sailed northwest to our final destination of San Carlos. We instantly fell in love with the dramatic scenery as the red mountains came into view. This was to be our next base of operations to explore the Mexican mainland. Based on life changing events with the birth of our grandson, we have made the decision to sell our sailboat to spend more time with him.
The history of our boat is that we are the 4th owners, she has sailed to and from Mexico once and spent the majority of her life in California. She is an amazing boat that I have the utmost respect for after sailing her through some treacherous and amazing seas."
