Belle was built in 1999 at the renowned boatyard of Devlin Designing Boat Builders to the design of the late Phil Bolger for a knowledgeable owner who fell in love with the design. According to Sam Devlin, to build this boat again at his yard would cost well over $120,000!
Phil Bolger was renowned for his Sharpie designs and Belle, to the best of our knowledge, was the only Bolger designed St. Valery Schooner that was ever built. As is typical with Sharpies, Belle is shoal draft and water ballasted. This makes her a very practical boat to explore the Puget Sound and anywhere else where you might encounter shoal waters or tidal areas. Also, it makes her a very easy boat to trailer to distant locations or store during our long winters.
The 26' lug rig makes her a delightful boat to sail and the 10 hp Honda engine moves her along like a little trawler. She has a 4' 1 0" headroom and sleeps four (two comfortably) and makes a cozy little retreat when the weather turns cooler. With kerosene lamps and an almost new Wallas heater/stove, she is comfortable below in any weather.
The current owners have cruised her since 2009 throughout the Puget Sound and Southern California, where they have cruised extensively in the Channel Islands and down to San Diego, where they kept her for several years.
Alas, having loved her for sixteen years, the current owners have moved inland to Central Oregon and have decided to sell her.
She has been meticulously maintained at the Devlin yard and is truly both an extremely practical fun little cruiser and a piece of art.
