J/130: Nifty Performer
"Have you seen a boat that looks and sails like a racing machine, yet is aimed at the cruising market? When you step aboard this 43-footer, you'll see how these two often disparate sailing worlds can be blended into one nifty boat..." ~ Chuck Mason/ Chris Caswell/ SAIL
Saga has been raced in the Marblehead to Halifax Race 5 times, once placing first in Team Racing with The Boston Yacht Club. Saga has been equipped for racing; some of the original equipment was either modified or removed. In the case that the new owner wants to return the boat to its original set-up those items will be included in the sale; this includes the original teak salon table, a teak pipe berth for the main cabin, the original Plexiglas companionway hatch, and all the original doors.
J Boats has taken the best of comfortable cruising design, combined it with the best of high-performance racing design, then added a unique asymmetrical spinnaker for improved downwind performance. J-130's America's Cup type asymmetric spinnaker is set from a 7-foot carbon-fiber, retractable J-Sprit. Jibing is easy, with nobody on the foredeck. Simply let out one sheet and pull in the other. The tack remains attached to the sprit at all times. With one side tied down, the sail is more stable. Wild oscillations are avoided. Whether it's blowing 5 knots or 25, assisted by a cockpit operated snuffer, two people can fly J-130's spinnaker. J-130 is a light displacement design born of modern materials of exceptional strength and durability. She has a very low center of gravity to achieve a high righting moment for good windward performance without crew on the rail; a long waterline length-to-beam ratio for superb directional stability and safe tracking in large offshore seas; and a generous sail area to wetted surface ratio for light-air performance. She was designed to be sailed by two people at racing speeds without sacrificing on-deck cruising comfort or shorthanded sailing systems. A proper cockpit dodger and roller furling headstay are standard. Below deck, J-130 is equipped for comfortable onboard living.

The entire rod rigging was inspected, reheaded, and new rod rigging was installed by North East Rigging Systems, LLC in 2010. The rod rigging was again professionally inspected at Journey's End Marina in 2019; any discrepancies were repaired at that time.
Set of Saga's J130 polars from the US Sailing Association.
Raymarine Axiom GPS for the cockpit.
The original steering wheel was replaced with a new 52" Edson ultralight Black Diamond wheel.
The original Harken steering bearing was replaced with a new Edson needle bearing for the steering wheel.
The original Harken rudder bearing was replaced with a JEFA self-aligning rudder bearing because the Harken bearing was susceptible to corrosion and the JEFA bearing is not.
Saga was outfitted with a new keel around 2003 after the owner contracted the boat's designer, Rod Johnstone, to design a new modern keel that was shallower than the original 9' draft. It is very similar to the elephant foot design that Rod Johnstone uses on his boats now.
