“ALLEGRO” is a nice example of what Hinterhoeller used to refer to the as "the greatest thirty-foot sailboat of all time". Her quality construction is apparent everywhere you look, and her sailing abilities of will surprise you.
When asked, experienced sailors generally speculate that the Nonsuch 30’ is well over 32’ in length. With an exceptional interior including a large “U” shaped galley, oversized quarter berth, large navigation station, luxurious main salon and wonderfully comfortable forward owner’s stateroom, “ALLEGRO” is one of the best of the legendary 30’ Nonsuch ULTRA sailboats to come on the brokerage market. She is in GREAT CONDITION! With 28’9” waterline and 11’10” beam, “ALLEGRO” falls within the living accommodations and superior stability and speed of much larger vessels. She is a joy to handle, nicely maintained, owned by the 2nd owner for well over 30 years. SHE IS …a “MUST SEE”.
The Nonsuch is the inspiration of Gordon Fisher, who with yacht designer Mark Ellis, approached George Hinterhoeller to build a comfortable cruising boat. This idea has produced over 950 boats from 22' to 36' that are enjoyed today by sailors of all types. Nonsuches are as unique as the sailors who love them.
She was built in Canada, whose main boatbuilding export has been C&C sailboats & all her construction details look very much like those of C&C boats, most likely because George Hinterhoeller, the builder, was formerly the president of C&C, and one of the founders of the three companies that merged that created C&C Yachts.
When Hinterhoeller created the Nonsuch he incorporated the foundations of C&C: a reputation for quality, good attention to finish detail and high-quality balsa-cored hull construction.
The Nonsuch 30 is actually the concept of retired ocean racer Gordon Fisher, the design of Mark Ellis, and the created child of Hinterhoeller, who is one of the few production boatbuilders with the legitimate title Master Boatbuilder, earned the hard way through apprenticeship in Europe.
Launched in 1978 the Nonsuch 30’ still stands out among the club members and coastal cruisers as a sturdy, extremely well built compact cruising sloop ideal for family coastal cruising and “gunkholing”.
We think the Nonsuch Ultra 30’ “ALLEGRO” is exactly what her designer and builder envisioned. The best boat possible for her size, and one of the nicest cruising auxiliary sailboats in the water….a boat that people who love sailing would love to sail. She is a rugged little cruiser often quoted as having a feel of a larger boat. She combines, quality construction and well-mannered sailing characteristics and offers her new owners, the promise of a rewarding relationship.
The Nonsuch 30 is an unusual boat by any standards. The unstayed wishbone cat rig is becoming increasingly popular and gives this design the general appearance of a traditional catboat. Her generally catboatlike hull dimensions produce the maximum hull volume on a minimum overall length. She will make an excellent coastal cruiser for a couple or family with up to three small children or two older children. Because she is easy to sail and rig, has a big cockpit and a roomy, well-ventilated interior, she should make a good Caribbean charter boat for two couples.
The interior volume of the Nonsuch Ultra 30 is an eye opener, even to those used to the modern trend toward maximum interior volume on minimum overall length. To anyone used only to the interior space of an older boat, the interior space of the Nonsuch Ultra 30 is absolutely stunning.
The waterline and beam of the Nonsuch Ultra 30 are about the same as that of a modern 36 foot cruiser-racer, and that beam is carried quite a bit further forward. Coupled with high topsides and a highly-crowned deck house, this yields a boat with tremendous interior volume for her overall length.
Below decks the Nonsuch 30 Ultra is fairly traditional with a spacious and practical layout for a 30-foot sailboat featuring a teak interior with teak and holly sole.
Starting forward is the master stateroom with a double berth to port and a vanity and hanging locker to starboard. Excellent storage in lockers, drawers. There is a door that closes the stateroom off from the main salon.
The head is next aft to starboard with a separate shower stall. There is a teak seat in the shower with storage outboard. You will also note an oval S.S. sink, Wilcox Crittenden Head W/Holding tank, and teak grate at the foot of the toilet. There are two entrances to the head, one from the main salon and the other from the master stateroom. The galley is opposite to port. The main salon has a settee to port with book shelves and a locker outboard and the nav station at the aft end.
There is a teak table which opens up to accommodate guests both port & Stbd and there are 2 opening storage areas in the top of the table. To starboard is an L-shaped dinette that converts to a double berth giving a total sleeping capacity for 5.
As you enter the center entrance cockpit companionway from below there is a teak grate for catching water, with 3 teak steps which will take you to a large, spacious and inviting cockpit.
The L-shaped galley features a large ice box with teak grate shelf, Force 10 stove, stainless steel sink and storage space above and below the counters.
