General Description
"TUGS" is elegant, yet simple, built for a well known retired B.C. tugboat operator whose main objective was to have "a good little seaboat with very little windage" .
On Jespersen's website (jespersenboats.com) it is noted that "TUGS" was "the result of one man's desire to have a small "workboat" sufficient for just himself to explore B.C.'s south coast. She is simple yet appropriately equipped for her purpose with a helm station inside for inclement weather and one outside for maneuvering in close quarters. With a large cockpit and ample windows, "TUGS" is ideal for someone who appreciates being close to the environment in which she travels."
A January 1987, Pacific Yachting article by John Shinnick entitled "One Man's Boat" describes "TUGS" as a "sweetie from her pert little upturned stem to her businesslike stern. Her sheer line sweeps low, her bow sits high and saucy........everything about this boat bespeaks seaworthiness".
Construction Details
The hull is sheathed in Dynel and epoxy, painted with Awlgrip Grey and trimmed with a nice touch of teak. Strongly built of two layers of 1/4" cedar, a layer of Honduras mahogany and two extra layers of cedar around the engine compartment. The keel and stem are mahogany. All-up displacement is 4400lbs and the 600 lbs. of lead ballast as part of the keel provides for a lovely solid ride.
Interior
The interior is painted in an attractive off-white with oiled teak trim. To starboard, immediately inside the companionway, the head lies out of sight beneath a small settee. A Dickinson Bristol diesel stove, to port, is fed by a 60 hour day tank. A sink is just forward of the stove, and a double berth with small coat rack is forward of the inside steering console. There is even a special cubby hole for your favourite dog.
