Simply stunning. Based around the popular and well-proven Ron Holland designed Swan 42. DOUBLE THYME was a custom build to demonstrate the possibilities with composite wood/epoxy construction. Built using the highest quality hardwoods to finish the interior she is completely unique.
Commissioned by J Thompson Co. Timber Merchants; the developers of the Speed Strip hull construction method DOUBLE THYME was to be the ultimate test bed and demonstration of this revolutionary new boat building method. Using wood with epoxy to create a composite timber hull and deck, structurally comparable to GRP and better suited to low volume construction. This method of construction is still used today by builders such as Fairlie and Spirit yachts with some notable yachts such as the legendary FLY built using the same system.
A copy of the Ron Holland 42 Swan which was in production until 1985 DOUBLE THYME provides safe, fast sailing with comfortable accommodation below decks for a maximum crew of 8. Much loved by her current owners they have spent the last 10 years improving and upgrading DOUBLE THYME some of her inventory highlights include:
Now afloat and in commission for the 2021 season DOUBLE THYME is in active use by her owners, exploring the waters of Scotland’s west coast. She is available for viewing by prior appointment.
DOUBLE THYME was originally named DOUBLE MAXIM and took part in the second TWOSTAR of 1986, where she finished second in her class. The Kayll brothers had taken part in the first TWOSTAR of 1981 in a yacht called Wild Thyme. Having satisfied their sponsor with the name Double Maxim they were determined to use the name Wild Thyme for their new yacht but it would need to be called Wild Thyme II. That name did not suit, so they came up with the amalgamation of the two yacht names, hence Double Thyme was born.
Her second owner who purchased her in 1992 based her in Blyth on the East Coast before migrating to the west and the waters of Scotland. We found the boat in need of some TLC 2010. Our test sail was an amazing experience, she was still a fast yacht and despite being in need of some work we could see the potential and were immediately convinced us that she would repay our time and effort to restore her with rewarding and safe sailing.
We have carried out several improvements along with maintenance of hull and deck. She now has an Autoprop, Stacpac and lazy jacks, a Profurl headsail and a new set of One Sails and a Hood cruising chute.
On the water, DOUBLE THYME is a fast yacht, she will close reach at ten knots with ease, more with some hefty crew on the rail. We have taken her around the UK, across to Holland, France and the Channel Isles. In 2018 we received line honors in our class in the Round the Island race and have competed in three West Highland Weeks where we were also placed. However our favorite cruising ground has to be the West coast of Scotland and we have found her ideal for exploring the coast line and islands in this part of the world.
