The Buzzards Bay 14 is L. Francis Herreshoff’s answer to Llewelyn Howland’s request for a slightly larger version of Nathaniel Herreshoff’s tried and true 12 ½. Mr. Howland, of the founding family of the Concordia Company, was a discerning customer and the resulting boat was a svelte little yacht of robust construction set atop L. Francis’ signature rabbeted ballast keel. With a Marconi sail plan of approximately the same square footage as the 12 ½ the design provides ease of handling with a bit more run to drive through the inevitable chop of a Buzzards Bay afternoon. In June of 2019 a completely restored 1982 example of LFH’s design number 86 will be available for purchase from the Boatbuilding and Restoration program at IYRS.
