The Bristol Pilot Cutter was used to rush a Pilot experienced with the harsh conditions of the Bristol Channel to an incoming tall ship. The pilot would then pilot the boat through the dangerous waters.
Lyle Hess based the design of the Bristol Channel Cutter after the Bristol Pilot Cutters, resulting in a seaworthy and fast boat.
