Aficionados of classic daysailers are always drawn to the combination of long overhangs, gaff rig, round-front cabin trunk, and low, sleek topsides. The Wianno Senior is what you get when you take those characteristics and apply them to a centerboard design for shallow water.
With her extra beam, heavy lead ballast keel, and full ends - the Wianno Sr. is a stiff and powerful performer and makes for relatively comfortable sailing. A self-bailing cockpit means they are safe in rough water, and the cozy cabin allows for the possibility of spartan cruising, or at least an afternoon nap at the mooring.
A Wianno Senior would be a good choice of classic daysailer for any shallow water area, and especially for joining the active racing fleet on the south shore of Cape Cod.
From 1914 to date, there have been over 200 Wianno Seniors built. That level of proliferation only follows a great design, and WoodenBoat Magazine has written several articles on the class. Perhaps the most famous Wianno Senior belonged to President Jack Kennedy. His boat, VICTURA (hull no. 94) is now on display at the John F. Kennedy Library.
CATALINA is hull number 165, and particularly important because she is understood to be the very last Wianno Senior built of wood (subsequent boats were built in fiberglass.) CATALINA is stored indoors in a barn in Stonington, CT and will require a bit of work below the waterline – but with her gleaming teak decks, varnished topsides, and sails and rig in great condition - she would be an ideal candidate for fixing up.
