Looking for our next boat had been nothing but painful – a deal that fell through, mispresented listings and brokers who had no idea what they were listing, and we were starting to get discouraged that our dream of having a new boat for the upcoming season was not going to happen. We had a wonderful experience with Virginia Yacht Brokers in the sale of our Monk 36, though that was not a surprise to us since we had previous experience with Chuck and Kelsey. When we purchased the Monk in 2009, it was from Virginia Yacht Brokers. At that time, though, we were going through an on-line broker as our agent. That fellow did little more than make phone calls to schedule visits to the boat However, Chuck Grice was amazing throughout the purchase to the point where we thought he was as much our broker as he was the previous owner’s broker.
When it came time to sell our Monk, we did not hesitate to engage Virginia Yacht Brokers as our “actual broker” this time. Again, our experience was outstanding and very successful, as the marketing effort was so effective the boat was sold in about one month. On this transaction, however, Parker Griffo handled the entire transaction efficiently and very professionally. We continue to be impressed with the level of performance of Virginia Yacht Brokers. We would not hesitate to do business with them again.
My wife Betsy and I recently sold our 2004 Monk 36 trawler through Virginia Yacht Brokers. We had owned the vessel for thirteen years. She had been used extensively, with 5000 hours put on the engine by us. The complete experience could not have been more completely pleasant. The vessel was initially detailed to a level where she showed as new. Staging was done that made her show very well. The preparation of our boat before showing was superb. It was all done seamlessly, with no questions for us. The cost for detailing and staging was very reasonable, particularly in consideration of how well it was done. Having the vessel at Virginia Yacht Broker’s place of business made it unnecessary for us to be involved with showing her to prospective buyers.
Chuck and Kelsey handled the communications with the buyer with very little input from us. There were very few questions for us to respond to. When it came time for the closing, that was all handled by Chuck and Kelsey. Documents were transmitted electronically, and they were very easy to review and respond to. We were very fortunate to have a buyer who was very experienced, knowledgeable and pleasant.
We chose Virginia Yacht Brokers because we knew of their record of handling the sale of several Monk 36’s. We certainly were glad we made that choice. Our boat was under contract very quickly, and a closing was completed in a very few weeks. They are so intuitive to your needs, attitudes, experience combined with the knowledge of the yachts that the sell that you quickly become addicted and return repeatedly to their brokerage. Unlike other addictions they continue to provide service beyond “selling” you a boat. They are a full service brokerage and have at their fingertips a complete spectrum of services. They have been in bussiness for many years and have hundreds, if not thousands of customers, technicians and other yacht professionals who readily attest to their integrity, expertise and sincerity, but they still should have a warning label because once you fall under their spell all of your dreams and boating needs will be efficiently attended to. We have visited Atlantic Yacht Basin and the Virginia Yacht Brokers undercover show room nearly a dozen times while traveling from Florida to Connecticut for our summers. We enjoyed seeing all the boats and wondering how they all seemed clean and well maintained, we were to find out. When we finished last summer on board we decided to sell our boat and planned on using a local broker there in CT. Our good friends who are a professional yacht delivery team reminded us of Virginia Yacht Brokers and told us in their minds it was the best place on the coast to sell our boat. Following their recommendation we made the trip back down to Atlantic Yacht Basin and met with Chuck Grice and his team, Bob Starr, Parker Griffo and Chuck’s wife Kelsey. Together they explained their "proven" process for selling yachts. Their program involves deep cleaning, staging and effective photography of the boat. Their frequent checks on each boat with scheduled cleanings and reports to us on any issues discovered made us feel very comfortable to leave the boat in their hands and head for Florida, never expecting to see the her again. As winter approached James Taylor the Atlantic Yacht Basin "Yard Manager" provided quick and very reasonable services for winterizing and repairing various systems that all boats require. Chuck and Kelsey went out of their way to make sure our boat presented itself in the best possible way. There was no "Nickle and Dimeing" for various extras they provided, and when they thought something should be taken care of by us we were immediately consulted. Parker's weekly report on how many people viewed our boat on their web site and on YouTube made us feel comfortable our boat was not left out of the mix of boats for sale. Chuck was always available and seemed to always be at work, including late weekend evenings. Chuck made the selling process very easy, even when we may have not been so easy to negotiate with. Survey, Sea Trial and Closing were seamless with Chuck guiding us and the buyer through the process. We were very pleased with the sale of our boat and will probably be back to Virginia Yacht Brokers this spring looking for our next boat.
Virginia Yacht Brokers had the listing for what seemed like my dream boat. I’d found it on line and was naturally concerned that it was too good to be true. Also, while I have some boat experience, I didn’t want to be swindled by some slippery salesman, especially when I live over 600 miles away. I don’t have time, or money, to waste.

I have spent most of my adult life preparing/dreaming for the day I'd buy ‘My Boat’.
Not my first boat. I’ve owned many small boats. Primarily small fishing and sail boats.
The ‘My Boat’ will serve as a vessel allowing me to cruise, do the Great Loop and live aboard part time. As 2018 approached (my retirement year) I became serious. I focused on my wants, my needs, and of course my budget.
There are numerous considerations when choosing a boat of this type. My studies had narrowed my selection down to a boat which had range, would sleep four comfortably and was between 36 To 42 feet in length. This size also allows me to handle her solo.

While I have been a boat owner for 30+ years, my recent purchase of a 37’ Nordic Tug was the first experience I have had with a yacht broker. First of “I din’t trust brokers”! But Chuck and his team are by all mean different: I trust them. I enjoyed working with them. Everything has worked seemingly.
The facts: After meeting with them and few conversation over the phone, we were so confident, that we moved (last fall) the boat from Florida to Great Bridge in Atlantic Basin to make sure they will take care of our boat.
Based on our bad experience, with a big agency in Florida, when we bought this boat … we were skeptical about brokers!!! We had to deal with a seller broker and a buyers broker (representing us… we really didn’t need him!!!) So never again...
But with Chuck/Virginia Yacht Brokers we felt reassure, confident and most importantly I trust them when they say "this is the offer and you can take it” and let’s work together to make it happens. Wow!
Three important points to consider when buying or even selling:
1: Get many opinions/website/former sellers. Check not only the track record but how happy are the sellers and buyers.
2: Make sure that there is a “detail” service available for your boat. You don’t want to sell a dirty car, a dirty house so consider detailing your boat. “Put it on stage”
3: Yatch World is an incontournable. You don’t need to put add in news paper, magazine. Nowadays selling a boat need boat owners to go to a broker. They still have the web platform to reach ton of potential buyers and all brokers have access to that. However, only the best of the best can walk a potential buyer into your boat and create this moment of trust!
-On a personal note if you buy you can go to Chuck and trust him. He can represent you and the seller and provide honest opinion. This is what I call a “professional broker”
As a result six months later we are moving forward with a good taste about the selling and we are pleased to write this to futur buyers and sellers.
Do I have a regret? Yes; i wish I would have bought our boat with them.

Our search for a live-aboard vessel began on the internet. We quickly landed on a few choices offered by Chuck and Kelsey at Virginia Yacht Brokers. From day one, we knew we were in good hands. Chuck was right there offering assistance, answering questions and doing whatever research we needed to help us make the right decision.
We first noticed Virginia Yacht Brokers during our many trips up and down the Intercoastal Waterway ICW with our 1939 Trumpy Washingtonian. We would routinely stop at Atlantic Yacht Basin for a service visit, a gas stop or just a place to spend the night. AYB is a great place as it is one of the best yacht service centers and has indoor storage. Particularly for us we appreciate their railway haul out as our 62’ Trumpy appreciates a gentle lift. During these many visits, although typically dealing with AYB, we couldn’t help but notice the variety of boats under the Virginai Yacht Broker Banner within the enclosed fresh water sheds. It was surprising because they were always looking good, clean and bright and in great locations. Not typical of the usual boat broker yard. During our many visits, we finally met the owners of VYB, Chuck and Kelsey Grice and their son Parker Griffo and associate Bob Starr. Every conversation was one of professionalism, confidence and enthusiasm, and we weren’t even listing a boat.
To our dismay, my wife and I had to leave the midwest and eastern shore to take up new opportunities on the west coast in Northern California. Of course we thought about bringing the Washingtonian but a trip like that would take about 9 months and if shipped would be a very difficult one as well. We decided it would be best to sell her. We originally thought about convenience to us as we weren’t leaving for a couple of years and engaged brokers near the areas where we were chartering Washingtonian but had no real activity and decided to look for a broker that would sell her. We remembered Virginia Yacht Brokers and checked around and particularly talked to the folks at AYB and everyone overwhelmingly said VYB is in the business of selling boats not listing them, whereupon we contacted Chuck Grice and met with him and discussed their services and how he would sell Washingtonian which he saw was our pride and joy.
After our meetings and discussions, we listed with Chuck’s team. You must understand that a 75 year old wooden boat that is 62 feet long and is a floating history book is not everyone’s idea of a runablout. She needs an owner that loves her and there just a couple of those and the notion of selling a boat like this quickly is a folly. Chuck knew this and understood the idiosyncasies of such a sale and the time it would take (which actually was very quick) and the effort to maintain her beauty in order to sell her.
Chuck and Kelsey first had her detailed by their detail team which made her spotless. They then found a great place in the shed that would protect her from the weather and give her maximu visibility. Next, understand Washingtonian was a pristine well designed and fitted piece of art, they staged her to even improve her look. After that took place, they photographed her the way she would be viewed in the best light for a sale. Their photographs and ours created a great sales brochure. Typically after that it was a matter of getting the listing posted and VYB were excellent at that and also reported activity every week and even reported on the boat condition at least every 3 to 4 weeks as she was cleaned and spruced up. This was wonderful for us as we moved to the west coast over a year ago and as absentee owners we felt confident that Washingtonian was in good hands and well loved.
Washingtonain was just sold and we will miss her but we are confident in the understanding that Virginia Yacht Brokers and the team found her a new home and have transitioned the stewardship of a Grande Dame to a new owner and one that will take the care necessary to give her continued care and love. We know that while we were away, VYB’s and the folks at AYB provided that service to her on our behalf. Our many thanks to all of them!!!!
A 1939 Trumpy
Whenever we have called at Atlantic Yacht Basin with our 40' Eagle motor vessel, we would stop in at Virginia Yacht Brokers to see what was going on in the yacht market. We always found Chuck and Kelsey Grice to be very likable and very engaged with their work. We decided that, when we came to the point where we would want to sell our boat, they would be the ones that we would list her with. When this time came, we stopped in to their facility and met with them; we encountered enthusiasm and professionalism throughout our experience in the sale of our boat.
After listing our boat with them, we continued on our way to our winter berth in Florida and found that VA Yachts kept in touch with us frequently and set up appointments for us to show the boat on our way. Within less than a month from when we listed the boat with VA Yachts, we had a reasonable offer - and a week after that we had an agreement to sell her for the full listing price. When buying a boat its relatively easy to comb the internet and find one, and sometimes many, vessels that seem to suit your needs - and then have your local Broker handle the deal. But if you are a Seller, it's much more important to do the research. There are a lot of Brokers out there, and in our case, many where we live in North Carolina. But we decided on Virginia Yacht Brokers, even though their location is a couple of boat days away from where we kept our boat. Besides wanting a Broker with an excellent sales record, we wanted our boat kept under cover and maintained ready to show. And we wanted a Broker associated with a yard that could handle any repair work needed to complete the sale. This Broker is attached to Atlantic Yacht Basin - a yard that has an excellent reputation and one that has done work for us in the past. We were not disappointed. Chuck and his team in Great Bridge did a terrific job staging the boat and finding the right Buyer. The negotiation process went smoothly and with very little effort on our part and we were satisfied with the final outcome. Dealing with Bob and Chuck was a pleasure from start to finish. From the first time we came to look at yachts to Bob waving us good bye as we launched the maiden voyage of Chance, our newly purchased Krogen Manatee, our experience was excellent and delightfully pleasant. The best trawler on the market is debatable; the best boat broker is not. As a retired couple who has had many boats over the years, we have dealt with many brokers. Chuck and Kelsey are the total package: honorable, knowledgeable, and fun. There are highs and lows when buying or selling a boat, but the Grice Team stays the course - guiding you in the right direction while at the same time, truly listening to your wishes. It took us 3 years to find the right trawler. Chuck never grew weary with our e-mails, which he and Kelsey answer promptly.
