Vicem 50 Classic: A Modern Downeast Style Express Cruiser

Known as one of the leading cold-molded wooden yacht builders in the World, Turkish yacht builder Vicem Yachts (pronounced “vee-chem”) has introduced their latest evolution in the form of a composite fiberglass boat that the company is able to construct faster and also promises will be easier to maintain.

Earlier this year YachtWorld and boat reviewer Marilyn DeMartini were able to hop onboard one of the first models at the Palm Beach Boat Show for a full walkthrough video tour of the new 50 Classic from Vicem Yachts. Viewers can see the entire vessel from stern to bow in our video below:

Vessel Overview

The Vicem 50 Classic can be ordered in either a single room or two-stateroom layout, and can also be outfitted with a flybridge. Despite being constructed of fiberglass, she retains the hallmark Vicem interior look and feel with interiors featuring hand-built mahogany.

Propulsion System And Power Options

The Vicem 50 Classic can be ordered with either an IPS or straight shaft, and is powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS600 engines standard, with an estimated top speed of somewhere around 30 MPH and cruising speeds between 22-25 MPH. Optional Volvo D8 IPS800 engines are available for those that wish to increase top speed while having a bit more power under the belt for heavier loads onboard. With lighter loads and minimal equipment at slower cruising speeds she can achieve close to 500 nautical miles. On a fully-loaded, optioned-out 50 Classic, she’ll like get around 350-400 nautical miles, at moderate cruising speeds.

Aft Deck

The aft deck has a large L-shape settee with a beautiful handmade table can be slid inside for dining when needed and a large bench gives you a lot of extra seating on the aft deck. A sink and an outdoor grill and refrigerator freezer below are a nice “summer kitchen” type feature for meal prep and outdoor dining. Custom made for the boat are fender holders in the back transom, and the transom door leads to the swim platform which has a custom made boat lift (standard feature) made for the little rib tender. The double aft deck doors open beautifully to both sides and lead from the teak-decked outdoor cockpit seamlessly into the cabin, so that you really have a free flow of conversation and of traffic from the aft deck to the interior and main salon.

At The Helm

Entering from the walk around deck to the helm is very easy through a solid helm door and you’ll see everywhere beautiful mahogany – although you have your choice of any kind of wood because everything in the Vicem 50 Classic interior is customizable. Even the dashboard is wood, where Garmin screens are
standard. The screens can range in size according to your taste, as the whole dash can be custom-built for discerning owners. Captains can have any choice of seating and Vicem outfits the controls with a beautiful wood steering wheel and Volvo controls and joystick. Beautiful visibility at the controls and a lot of natural light throughout the cockpit.

Interior Cabin

Down below the cabin is built-to-suit from available layouts. The Vicem 50 Classic we got onboard was the two stateroom layout because the owners wanted to have a full king size en-suite stateroom along with an extra berth for the kids (with its own private head to boot). This layout provides plenty of space, although with a single stateroom layout you can have a much larger galley and salon. Either way the vessel is nicely appointed with plenty of room and lots of storage space.

The heads are beautifully done with custom tile and ceramic sinks so they’re very comfortable and very large for a yacht of this size. The galley is has open space above and lots of lighting giving you an open, airy
feel. Vicem will make whatever space utilization modifications owners desire – in this case, the boat has its own washer and dryer tucked conveniently under the stairs and an extra drawer on the forward part of the cabin. Wood finishes everywhere are beautifully done with flowing lines and inlays in the mahogany floor.

Galley Design

A refrigerator and freezer are tucked away, plus a pop-up tv utilizes space again very efficiently along with a pop-up entertainment center that comes up out of the counter. The model we boarded had a custom-built mahogany table which can be slid back, plus a settee that slides out to become an extra berth. She is a comfortable live-aboard when needed for longer cruising trips and able to accommodate a family with children.

This boat has everything that couples and small families need to just enjoy cruising the coast, from Florida to New England and back. She is a great, classic cruiser built years of leisurely exploring and adventure.
