If you are seeking a vessel with a classic look and a open airy feel you need look no further than “Samarang “ an Islander Freeport 36 one of Robert Perry's favorite designs. She's a joy to sail in light winds or in heavy blue water. A desirable "Plan B" version, featuring a head forward and generous Pullman berth to port. The cockpit has plenty of room for 6 people but is very protected for those offshore passages, and has a unique, quite clever, fold down boarding steps. The dodger is nice and high, has great visibility and comes with Bimini and side curtains fully enclosing the cockpit. The Captains chair is removable for extra space in the cockpit when at anchor and is cupped for level seating when the boat is healed. The solar panels, mounted on a SS arch, provide extra shade in the rear portion of the cockpit. The panels, along with the wind generator and engine alternator provide more than enough power to maintain a charge in the four 6 volt golf cart batteries arranged in two banks. There's an additional 12 volt starting battery. All batteries are less than one year old.

The port side stern pulpit supports a propane barbecue grill that is fueled from the main propane tank. The propane bottle is aluminum and the propane locker also houses the cockpit shower/hose attachment. There is a work table next to the grill. There is a motor mount for a small dingy motor on the port side stern pulpit and a motor mount, with lift, on the starboard side.

Down below, forward of the salon, there is a queen sized Pullman berth, with tons of storage. Two cedar lined hanging lockers with drawers situated in between. The head is spacious and comfortable for showering even underway. There is a unique clothes hamper built into the counter top. The cabinet doors thru out the boat are either louvered or cane centers for ventilation.

The main salon is spacious, in excellent condition, with a large salon table and quarter berth, fold out double berth and nav station. All lights throughout the interior have been changed to LED. The ports or windows in this area provide a lot of natural light and grand view of your surroundings, making this one of the most comfortable live aboard sail boats available. A big plus for tall sailors is Samarang's 6 foot 4 inch headroom throughout.

The galley has a 3 burner propane stove with oven. The Adler Barber refrigeration includes 9 cu ft of cooler with a small freezer The double deep stainless steel sink with hot and cold water has foot pump for fresh water, and separate filtered drinking water tap. There is a good amount of counter top area and plenty of storage area for the long passages.

The like-new Volvo/Perkins engine is located under the salon sole and has excellent access from the top and all sides.

The mast can be lowered using an electric winch under the cockpit sole to clear under low bridges. The vessel has been fitted with over spec'd rigging, the next size up from factory standard. The main sail is in excellent shape and has one reef. Two head sails, a working jib and 120% Genoa are included, both in excellent condition. These are both very efficient sails and provide good cruising power There is a whisker pole for the downwind days. The head sails are hanked on a roller furling system which gives the unique ability to furl or drop a sail.

The auto pilot is electric comprised of a below deck Benmar commercial electric drive unit coupled to the steering quadrant with a stainless steel chain. The chain, cables and associated hardware where all new in 2013. The Benmar electronics were upgraded to Navico. This auto pilot steers the boat in the worst of conditions. You never have to steer even in the roughest of seas, even down wind.

The water system there are 60 gallon stainless steel tanks, a sediment household filter and then the pressure pump. The pressure pump feeds a 6 gallon water heater that is serviced by 115 volt shore power and the engine. There are two deck scuppers that collect water from the deck to fill the water tanks.

Diesel fuel is stored in an 80 gallon aluminum tank. There is an inspection plate on top of the tank for easy access for cleaning. The fuel is filtered by a Racor separator with 10 micron element and then filtered thru the engine mounted filter with 2 micron element. The engine is self priming and easy to restart. Power is provided by a Volvo-Penta D-2 55C, naturally aspirated 4 cylinder diesel. This motor was built by Perkins was designed as a marine engine, not a “marinized” automobile engine. Power is delivered to a two bladed bronze fixed prop thru a Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission. The prop sits right behind the keel and can be lined up behind the keel to reduce drag.. The engine is fresh water cooled and has a transmission oil cooler.

The dodger is new and all canvas is in excellent condition. The main sail cover and head sail bag are in good to excellent condition. The new foredeck cover is excellent for shade while anchored and allows air flow into the hatches during rains. The main mast and whisker pole have been recently painted. The beige color is attractive and easy on the eyes with no harsh glare. The standing rigging has been kept in excellent condition and the spreaders are new.

In 2017 the bottom was stripped to bare fiberglass. There was no evidence of blisters. A new barrier coat was applied and covered with two coats of bottom paint.

Samarang is a turn key cruiser. Come aboard with your food and clothes and go. Dishes, pots and pans, waffle iron, toaster, juicer, utensils, etc in the galley. Sheets, blankets, pillows, towels wash clothes, soap, toothpaste etc., it's all there. Spare parts and tools. Everything works.

From the owner: “I take great pride in passing a good sound vessel to the new owner. I have been loving Samarang for over 26 years and I am moving away from sailing so it goes with everything needed.”
