SPECIFICATIONS
Construction
The hull is solid fiberglass finished with a protective barrier coat and ISO gelcoat, and stiffened with a fiberglass inner grid. The deck is injection molded with discontinuous balsa coring. The keel is cast iron. Finish quality is above average for a mass-production cruising boat.
On Deck
Cockpit is quite large, it will easilly accommodate half a dozen sailors under sail, and the cockpit won’t be engulfed in sail handling spaghetti. A removable helm seat opens the transom to the swim platform (instead of a full-size scoop) at anchor, with wet stowage below the cockpit sole for a life raft or diving gear.
A large solid cockpit table provides a strong brace point amidships, and the bench seats have high, comfortable seat backs. The two shallow cockpit lockers are also easily accessible. The deck forward is clean and uncluttered, with all working lines routed through conduits underneath.
The SO409 features a double-ended German mainsheet system, with both sides of the sheet led all the way aft to the twin wheels. This boat has a single winch installed at each of the two helm stations, port and starboard. With the jib sheets also led aft to the helm positions, it’s possible for the helmsperson to control both the main and jib without leaving the wheels. Helm is nicely balanced and forgiving.
Under Sail and power
The boat carries a conventional slab-reef mainsail with a 108 percent jib sheeted to short tracks mounted on the forward end of the coachroof.
In lighter winds the boat can top 5 knot speed sailing close-hauled, or 6.1 knots in 10 knots of true wind. You can leave the wheel unattended for long periods without the boat falling off. In stronger wind you can reach over 6 knots on a close reach, and the helm will stay balanced, with no tendency to round up when the wheel was released.
A 40hp Yanmar diesel engine provides plenty of power to push the 409 in flat water at 6.7 knots turning 2,000 rpm; flat out at 3,200 rpm along at 8.5 knots.
In terms of noise under power, the boat is in the middle of the range: 88 decibels at 2,600 rpm; 91 decibels at 3,000 rpm.
The engine space is quite large, with access from three different sides.
ACCOMMODATIONS
The accommodation is completed with an attention to detail that can be felt throughout. Her interior feels modern and contemporary and yet comfortable and welcoming with a mass of light pouring in through numerous hull ports and overhead hatches. This has been achieved by using the finest materials available. High end fabrics and different flooring make a space that can be combined to each owners’ taste and style.
This boat has a 3 cabin layout with 1 head that includes a separate shower compartment.
At the bow you will enjoy a very large master stateroom with a wide V-berth.
The galley is aft to starboard, near the companionway. Here is the large top-loading refrigerator, more than adequate storage space, all is well organized and easy to access.
The dominant feature in the saloon is the fold-over dinette table to starboard. Mounted on a fixed central pedestal, it can be quickly lowered to convert the wrap-around settee into a double berth.
At the port side lies navigation table and two seats.
Looking aft you will find two aft cabins with more interior volume than on other similar boats.
