The Townsend Tern was designed and built in Port Townsend, WA by Kees Prins and launched in 2011. She’s been incredibly and meticulously maintained by her current owners and is in like-new condition.

“The Townsend Tern adroitly answers the question of whether good-looking small boats permit anything but cavelike accomodations. In the Tern, the paradox is literally one you can live with. Her attractive hull, accentuated by the lines of her plywood-lapstrake planking, still has a welcoming interior.” – Tom Jackson, WoodenBoat’s 2011 Small Boats

The Townsend Tern is incredibly well laid-out on deck and down below. Her cockpit is extremely roomy and comfortable with great visibility looking forward underway. All Sail Controls are cockpit led for ease of handling and single-handing. The unstayed, cat ketch rig is a perfect match for the boat allowing for easy reefing as well as ease in rigging and de-rigging the boat for use. The motor well completely seals up on the bottom for maximum efficiency under sail. The side decks are wide and easy to maneuver forward and aft upon with good hand rails running the entire length of the cabin house. The foredeck is also wide for a boat this size with plenty of room for handling the anchor, docklines or relaxing underway with a stainless steel bow pulpit for safety.

Going down below, the Companionway Hatch is wide with great access to the main cabin. The centerboard trunk doubles up as the steps to enter the cabin with the lowest step longer to act as a seat while cooking in the galley or plotting your course on the chart table. Aft on the starboard side is an AirHead composting toilet on rails to slide fore and aft for use or storage. To port is the House Battery and both the Battery Chargers for the House and Electric Motor System. Forward and to port is the Galley which is well designed with lots of storage. There is a Wallas Stove that can also be used to Heat the cabin. There is also a stainless sink with a faucet that draws from and drains to plastic jerry cans beneath the sink for easy filling and dumping. The Navigation Station is to starboard with storage cabinets, drawers and a lifting table for storage as well as the DC and AC Electrical Panels.

Going forward from the Galley and Navigation Station are two long settees that can be joined together by lifting and attaching the floor boards to the side settees to make a large double berth. The batteries for the Torqeedo Electric Motor are stored securely under the settees. Forward of the settees is the anchor locker and storage.

The Townsend Tern is extremely well-built and perfectly suited for exploring the Pacific Northwest and beyond. She must be seen to appreciate the level of craftsmanship that went into the design and build of the boat. Don’t miss this boat if you’re looking for an efficient, very well-designed and built trailer-able sailboat that is in like-new, turn-key condition. The boat comes with many extras as well, everything you need to go sailing now!
