One of the most highly specified yachts in the world, this is the craft for those who don't know the meaning of the word 'compromise'. Each Manhattan 84 is built to order, which means you can obtain a semi-custom yacht at a production cost, choosing the layout and interior design options that meet your own requirements. And there is room for almost every feature you could desire.
The new flagship of the Sunseeker fleet has a lot in common with the city. The Manhattan 84 abounds with finesse and polish, appealing to boaters who want a pointed change from the production-boat realm. Yet the 84, the largest semicustom yacht ever to emerge from the UK, offers a range of rudimentary features to keep those same boaters from turning their backs in a New York minute.
Just as you can’t imagine Manhattan without its fast pace, you can’t imagine a Sunseeker without performance. If you’re the type who likes to zoom over to Bimini for lunch and spend the rest of the day poking around the islands, you’ll certainly be able to do it aboard the 84–she has a 450-mile range on nearly 1,800 gallons of fuel. Twin 1,283-hp MAN V12 1300PS diesels combine with V-drives and propellers to yield a top speed in the low-30-knot range and a cruise speed in mid-20-knot range.
Of course, a good turn of speed is directly related to weight savings, and Sunseeker employs a few methods to accomplish this on the Manhattan 84: a stiffened single-skin bottom with balsa-cored topside, PVC foam-cored deck, and carbon-fiber-reinforced superstructure. Isophthalic resin, woven rovings, and unidirectional fiberglass are used, in addition to a bonded-foam girder system, isophthalic gelcoat, and antifouling and osmosis treatment.
One of the first places Sunseeker combines style and substance is the saloon. It’s split-level, a solution to the dilemma of creating separate relaxation and dining areas without resorting to confining bulkheads. Most Americans will likely be surprised by this design scheme, having gotten used to seeing one space cater to both needs, but Sunseeker’s arrangement has met with success on previous smaller models, including its Manhattan and Predator 74s. You’ll find highly polished American cherry and bird’s-eye maple in both spots.
Just like her terrestrial namesake, the Manhattan 84 offers you plenty of options to satisfy your needs. The layout (shown here), with a midship crew cabin below and a garage for the Sunseeker Outlaw jet boat, is essentially the same, although the wetbar moves to the port side of the upper saloon, a circular dining table is flush to starboard up here, and a large settee and occasional chair replace the wetbar on the lower-saloon level.
Since Sunseeker devotes the main deck to lounging space, it places the fully equipped galley below deck. In the lower-saloon wetbar/aft-crew setup, the galley is situated just forward of amidship on the port side, while in the other layout, it’s fully aft and to starboard. Either way, counters are covered with Avonite, while beneath your feet is a heavy-duty rubber-studded sole. A full-size refrigerator-freezer, double-draining sink, electric oven, four-burner stove, dishwasher, and trash compactor ensure you’ll be able to dish up and clean up any meal.
The bridge, along with a wetbar with a refrigerator and icemaker, services seating for six around a central dining table.
Also convenient–and certainly a welcome change for anyone stepping up from a production boat–is the private spiral staircase leading to the owner’s suite from the lower half of the saloon. With a diagonal queen-size bed, a two-seater sofa, a vanity/desk, and en suite facilities that include a bidet, it can serve instead as the VIP stateroom while you retire to the other cabin, should you wish to give some lucky guests the royal treatment.
