Twenty feet may well separate them in length overall, but there is plenty of common ground between the innovative Swan 40 and her larger sister, the Swan 60. Both boats represent landmark changes in the range of Swan yachts and both shaped the future for subsequent models. Highland Fling - besides being a sophisticated, high tech Regatta version and the very first Swan 60 to appear - was fitted with a fractional rigged carbon mast, the first the company had ever tried. She had a 3.5m deep, high performance bulb keel, a product of Frers' America's Cup research program . The 60R had twin wheels on deck and a sparse but high quality fit out below. This was by no means the norm for this marque. However, it was no coincidence that the 60R turned out to be such an outstanding success. Her research program had been substantial and far-reaching; her performance on the race course and under testing conditions inspired everybody. Her reputation spread quickly and she was soon nicknamed the 'Pocket Maxi', a fitting title for this boat, seen by many as the modern day replacement for the highly successful Swan 65. The cruiser - racer version that followed has a less demanding masthead spar (built in aluminum) and her draft is a more manageable 3.0m. Her interior is more sumptuous and has provision for 6 to 8 berths in up to 4 individual cabins, each with its own en suite head. A comprehensive series of individual layout options caters to the widest possible range of requirements.
