If you are searching for a blue water cruising yacht that can be safely operated by a couple, then look no further. It is rare to find a yacht that makes you want to slip the lines and reach for the horizon quite as much as GOLDEN OPUS, and also one that carries such pedigree. Created as her designer’s personal yacht, Ron Holland drew a good looking profile which is instantly recognizable as his work. The interior layout was drawn by Andrew Winch and she was built by Sensation Yachts of New Zealand in 1997 with a hull constructed from high grade 5083 aluminium.

GOLDEN OPUS was constructed to very high standards and this is evident throughout. Her current owner, an experienced marine engineer, has taken pride in his ownership of the yacht and the gleaming engine room, perfectly laid out and of a size that one might expect on a larger yacht, is a testament to this. All systems on board are well maintained and the owner personally rebuilt the main engine, a Lugger 165HP from the ground up in 2015. The main generator, a 20Kva Northern Lights, runs perfectly and is accompanied by a 9kva auxiliary generator which was installed new in 2015.

On deck GOLDEN OPUS makes perfect sense. The foredeck is a clear flush deck upon which the tender is stowed in removable chocks. Aft, a bathing platform and steps which winch up to marry into the transom and aft deck make for easy boarding when stern to and provides safe access to the water when at anchor. The centre-cockpit has ample seating and remains dry and safe even with the decks awash in heavier weather conditions. The steering position offers a clear view all around and has controls and foot switches positioned to allow single handed sailing with ease.

GOLDEN OPUS’ rig is particularly interesting. The mast is noticeably tall (33m) and the fully battened Doyle mainsail is set on luff cars and features single point reefing. The forestay meets the mast at about nine tenths of its height and the working headsail fills the foretriangle, sheeting down to an athwartships track just ahead of the mast. A single sheet is led back to the cockpit via a concealed tube, appearing at the starboard coaming. The headsail is completely self-tacking, so that when the helmsman wants to tack, he just tacks. A hydraulic outhaul, backstay and boom vang complete the package. The mast and boom were removed and repainted in 2015 and all standing rigging was replaced by the original mast suppliers who flew from New Zealand to complete the work.

As well as being a genuinely comfortable ocean cruiser, having cruised both the Pacific and the Caribbean, she is also a fast passage maker with several race wins under her belt, and can easily make 10kts in light airs.

Below decks, GOLDEN OPUS continues to impress. Her four cabin layout features a very large master cabin aft with comfortable sofa and en-suite, a double berth cabin forward port, again with en-suite, and two symmetrical twin bunk cabins forward which share a forward head. The galley is large and practical at sea with a dinette table and proper refrigeration.

The stand-out feature is, of course, the raised deck saloon, which offers superb views out and features a large sofa and dining table (convertible into another double berth when needed) along with an electrically raised flat screen TV linked to the on board home computer system. The forward facing navigation table to starboard also offers control of the yacht from inside with engine and autopilot controls to hand.

Now seriously available for purchase, we strongly encourage inspections and look forward to introducing you to this impressive yacht. The next chapter in the life of GOLDEN OPUS is yours to write.

For the final word, who better to comment than Ron Holland himself;

"I created GOLDEN OPUS to fulfill my design goal of creating the ultimate ‘family cruising yacht’. At 72 feet (22 metres) in length and with a modern high aspect ratio self tacking rig, I felt this was the largest yacht that an experienced yachtsman could handle (with a couple of paid hands involved to allow limited chartering). With my partners, Howard Kilroy and Andrew Winch, and their families we cruised GOLDEN OPUS from New Zealand through the Western Pacific to European waters, well-proving my original design concept.

GOLDEN OPUS and her sister VOLARE have many successful ocean miles under their keels."
