Pipe Dream IX was custom built to the owner's specs in 1996 and has been maintained to his exacting requirements since then. (He actually got to Pipe Dream XV in a variety of models over the years!)

The principals of the J Boats - TPI partnership have combined in this investment-grade sailing yacht more than 150 years of experience in building, designing and sailing the world's best sailboats.
Advanced composite construction, an easily driven hull shape and a very low center of gravity result in noticeable differences in how the J-160 performs. Less sail is needed, winch loads are reduced, and the constant sail-changing of heavier displacement cruisers is avoided. J-160 is as easy to handle and sail as a traditional 42-footer. This is a boat which 2-3 people can manage without reliance on powerful or heavy electro-mechanical devices.
The design mandate for the J-160 was to exceed all prior standards for a cruising yacht of this size. One had to feel a sense of joy and control at the wheel as the boat leapt forward in a gust of wind with power and stability. Putting the rail under or shortening the sail shouldn't happen under 20 knots of wind. The J-160 had to slide effortlessly through waves upwind, keeping the crew dry and leaving no signature quarter-wave. Running in seas, it had to slide with great directional stability and good forward buoyancy to ride up over waves ahead. The sail plan had to be manageable, versatile and balanced, yet powerful enough to stabilize motion in waves for a quantum improvement in sailing comfort at sea.
As for aesthetics, the J-160 is traditional in a functional and purposeful way. Short overhangs are combined with a smooth sweep of the sheerline and low freeboard to reduce wind resistance and facilitate boarding. The bow sections are flared to deflect waves downward, keeping the decks dry. The quad spreader rig conveys a graceful power, giving no hint of how easily it is managed. The interior is spacious, clean in execution, beautifully appointed and exquisitely finished, befitting a proper flagship.
Every detail and need has been addressed in terms of provisioning, equipment and storage space for coastal and offshore cruising. The liveaboard comfort and styling of this yacht goes far beyond what you might expect from J Boats, whose reputation was first built in world-class racing. That racing heritage is an invaluable bonus when it comes to quality of construction and many years of problem-free ownership. The J-160 exceeds expectations, representing a significant step forward in quality construction and strength to weight ratios.
A quick tour of the interior starting at the companionway, one finds the galley directly to port across from the nav station to stbd. The aft/day head is also stbd just forward of the stbd double cabin. To port aft of the galley is the third cabin with engine/mechanical access.
Forward in the salon the dinette is to port with a large settee that can act as a berth. And there is an additional sea berth above and behind the settee. A nice seating settee is to stbd.
The master is forward with the large head/shower in the Vee. A desk/vanity with a swing ou seat is along the stbd hull and the double pullman berth is to port.
There are two MarineAire a/c systems to maintain the interior at a comfortable temperature.
The large L-shaped galley is well equipped with both cold plate and 12V refrigeration. Two top opening spaces on the counter top and one along the aisle by the nav station. Large stainless steel double sink with hot/cold water and salt water foot pump. A Force 10 3 burner propane stove and oven provide a secure cook surface supplemented by a Kenmore built-in microwave. Lots of cabinets, cubbies and drawers provide spaces for all the galley ware and provisions.
The recently installed engine is an upgraded Yanmar 4JH4-TXI 110 hp. Replaced in 2014 the hours are thought to be about 1050. It provides power thru the Aqua Drive coupling to a Max-Prop feathering prop. Easy access under the companionway and thru the aft cabins.
The fuel supply consists of two aluminum 75 gallon (approx) tanks under each aft berth and two rubber bladder 37 gallon "tanks" in the aft lazarettes that each feed directly to one of the other tanks. Each fulls independently from a deck fill. Total is approximately 220 gallons.
There is also a Open Ocean water desalination system rated at 40 gph and capable of operating at 110V or 12V.
Pipe Dream has several electrical systems including with the normal 110V/50A shore power, a new Westerbeke Model 7.6BTC 110V/7.7 KW diesel generator and a 12V/100A Balmar alternator on the engine. Replaced in 2014. Current hours are 1100.
The battery bank is conveniently located under the sole at the companionway. It consists of 4 8D Glass mat 12 V batteries for the house and a 12V Group 27 deep draw start battery for the engine and generator.
In the cabin, there is also a Magnum inverter for the outlets and to operate the microwave.
Pipe Dream has a full compliment and even redundancy of electronics for navigation and communication.

The rig is comprised of a carbon mast and boom supported by solid SS rod shrouds and 4 spreaders. The boom is supported by a hydraulic vang operated at the helm. And there is also a hydraulic back stay adjustment adjusted by the same control.
The head sail is furled on a Harken furler and the main sail is on the boom with custom stack pack and lazy jacks.
The compliment of winched are all oversized for the operation. They consist of:
- 2 x Lewmar 66 3-speed primary winches
- 2 x Lewmar 50 2-speed main sheet winches
- 2 x Lewmar 54 2-speed halyard winches
- 2 x Lewmar 48 2-speed spinnaker winches on the coach roof.
And a heavy duty Lewmar traveler system just forward of the helm for easy main sheet trimming.
A retractable spinnaker bow sprit is extended from the bow when in use and retracted back using the line in the cockpit.
The sail compliment includes -
- 1 mainsail (currently bent on)
- 1 Yankee head sail (currently bent on)
- 2 Storm jibs (1 new)
- 1 Genoa
- 2 Asymmetrical spinnakers
The ground tackle is a large plow type anchor on a chain/rope rode controlled by a vertical drive Lewmar windlass. The rode is stored in the forward section of the huge sail locker in the bow. Room for the spinnaker and fenders/Lines and lots more.
On the stern rail is a new Lifesling and a Switlik MOB throwable device.
There is a small dodger to protect the companionway and a full set of cockpit cushions to protect the crew!
Bottom just repainted in April 2020.
Revere Elite 6 man liferaft in a soft valise case is included but would need inspection.
A Quicksilver 9' RIB dinghy and Yamaha 8 hp Enduro 2-cycle outboard are included.
Plus tons (probably literally) of spares, extra necessary items, tools, shore power adapters, and stuff.
She's ready to go again.
