A newly built wooden boat is something special, particularly when she was designed by the legendary Sam Crocker and built with the finest possible materials and craftsmanship.

SURPRISE is a faithful replica of Crocker’s 1933 design #157 POLE STAR, which is described in the design catalog written by Crocker’s son, S. Sturgis, as having been designed primarily as a cruising boat, but proving herself “more than ordinarily successful in races along the New England Coast.”   Although only 34’ on deck Crocker was a master at fitting a lot of boat into a small space and her 30’ waterline and masthead rig are undoubtedly partially responsible for the great turn of speed.

SURPRISE was launched 1996, having been built with cedar planking over laminated white oak frames and black locust for the deadwood and floor timbers.  The lower planking and sheer strake are mahogany, and decks are fiberglass/epoxy over marine plywood.   In a 2002 survey, Paul Haley states that “The vessel was built to very high standards.  In building this vessel Mr. Cass took into consideration the longevity of some of the materials in the original design and changed them for longer lasting materials.”  For instance all metal fastenings throughout the vessel are bronze.

From a maintenance standpoint SURPRISE benefits from just the right amount of exterior varnish and a virtually maintenance free painted aluminum rig (new sails in 2014).  Her hull and deck structure are practically new, and she promises to provide her next owners with a lifetime of enjoyment at considerably less maintenance cost than that which is typical of a classic vessel this size.

SURPRISE’s interior is mostly painted, simple and clean.  Her laminated plywood housetop is free from beams giving her a very open feeling and providing an excess of headroom.  All systems are up to date and easily accessed, and she features a lovely small Shipmate wood/coal stove as so many Crocker boats had.    There are bunks for four people – two forward and two in the main cabin.

For an exceptionally well built wooden boat, easily maintained and priced for a quick sale, SURPRISE may be just what you’ve been waiting for.  For a complete list of equipment and a copy of the 2002 survey please click the button to request more information.
