With the classic center cockpit layout, the Caliber 47 has two staterooms, each with private head and separate shower. The master cabin aft has access via doors on both sides and great ventilation with twin opening hatches just above the berth. Hatches were removed and rebuilt by Select Plastics in June, 2016. The fwd berth is Pullman style and very comfortable for two.
The port L settee is also convertible to a 3/4 berth. A large teak drop leaf table is bulkhead mounted to port with storage behind. There is a dedicated nav station and excellent seagoing galley. Ventilation is superb through 18 opening ports and 4 overhead hatches. Teak and holly sole, navy blue upholstery, and varnished teak bulkheads complete the layout.
The galley aboard the Caliber 47 is spacious and has room for two to work together. The white cupboards, back splash and walls give it bright, clean feel. The space between the counters and engine doors make it safe and comfortable to work while underway. The features are:
- Over 9' counter space
- Top opening separate Sea Frost refrigerator and freezer with 110V or engine driven compressors for the cold plates
- Refrigerator w/top and front loading
- Twin deep fiberglass sinks
- Built in microwave
- Force 10 LPG 3 burner stove w/oven
The mechanical space on the Caliber 47 is accessed by large, twin opening doors in the galley and two opening panels in the master head and shower for access to all sides and equipment. Inside the space are all the systems including engine, genset, fuel manifold, water manifold, water pump and pressure accumulator, water maker, batteries.
The engine is a Yanmar 4JH2TE 75 hp Turbo diesel with approx. 4900 hours. A new transmission and dripless PYI stuffing box were installed in April, 2015. New starter, solenoid, start battery, key switch and wiring added in August, 2017.
The fuel manifold combines the three fuel tanks thru two separate filters that can be cleaned and/or changes while using the other.
Fuel capacity is about 150 gallons below the salon sole and 2 x 50 gallon saddle tanks on either side of the aft cabin.
A HRO 400 gpd (about 16 gph) water maker is located in the engine space. It operates on 110V from shore power or the genset. It has about 450 hours of operation.
The electronics suite is Raymarine with a ST7000 autopilot and ST-60 Multi on the helm pedestal and with ST-60 Depth, Wind, Speed displays over the companionway. A Raymarine E120 chartplotter/radar color display is mounted in the cockpit forward under the dodger. These displays were upgraded and the chartplotter/radar was added in about 2007.
In addition, there are redundant VHF with one station is at the nav station and one at the helm pedestal. And redundant antenna with one mounted on the masthead and the other on the stern pulpit.
An Iridium Sat phone with Smart Modem was installed in 2011. This allows for world-side communications and email access under way for weather and communications.
The electrical system is a 110V system with two separate 30A shore power supplies. The 12V systems are supplied but 2 x 4D AGM batteries (new in April, 2015) and a separate Optima start battery for the engine and generator (new in August, 2017). A Heart 2500 Inverter/Charger provides charging on shore power and 110V power while underway.
A new Northern Lights 6 kw generator was installed in 2011 and was used successfully during the Caribbean trip. It has about 1200 hours now. There is a sound shield available but not currently in use.
Sails and Rigging
The Caliber 47 has a very flexible sail plan with the unique convertible cutter rig design. The boat has a Z-Spar keel stepped in mast furling rig with double spreaders and twin backstays. Mast furler assembly was removed, rebuilt by Z-Spar, and reinstalled in June, 2016.
New UK Halsey main sail and 130% Genoa were added in 2011. An asymmetrical spinnaker with an ATN snuffer and a hank-on self-tacking staysail for the inner forestay complete the sail compliment.
Lewmar 54ST primary winches are at the helm for easy single handed sailing. One Lewmar 44ST electric winch is at the companionway to control the mainsail furling and spinnaker halyard. Another Lewmar 40ST is behind the cockpit and available for the mainsheet and/or the genoa furling line.
The Caliber 47 has a lot of unique features from the collision bulkhead forward to the special designed swim ladder aft. The ballast is integral to the keel and made up of concrete and steel. And the skeg hung rudder provides stability and strength underway.
Wildest Dream has a full bimini and dodger with canvas covers. A 3/4 enclosure also protects the crew from the weather while providing quick access to the deck. A Kato davit and Forespar engine crane are on the aft deck.
Ground tackle is a 45# CQR on 200 ft of chain and a 33# Bruce on a chain/rope rode. The windlass is a new Lewmar V-3 with capstan installed in August, 2017.
