Few boats enjoy such a cult-like following as the Island Packet, and for good reasons.

Built for serious offshore cruising in safety and comfort, the Island Packet has never in its 30 years of production, and regardless of the world economy, which forced many yacht productions to cut corners on the quality, suffered a tarnished reputation for second-to-none quality and durability. With a hull inspired by classic displacement, yet refined with a modern mind, the Island Packet shows what is regarded as the best sea-handling qualities in today’s shipbuilding. As many IP owners have described, the weather, no matter how heavy, simply goes un-noticed. The hull will not surf, will not slam over the top of waves, will not yaw, and remains steady in large following seas. If the boat will not sprint around the buyoys, it will nevertheless chew up the miles relentlessly while remaining comfortable when most other boats have reduced canvas or lay hove-to. The Island Packet loves big winds and will easily remain charging forth at 8-9 knots in a 20-22 knots breeze with hardly a splash on deck, thanks to its high topsides and sustained momentum between gusts.  Should the wind dies off, the boat is fitted with a reliable, economical but powerful Yanmar 44HP, which is designed to run for days on end if needed on 3L / h at 7-8 knots.  The enclosed prop and fully supported rudder eliminates the risk of tripping your rudder over fishing nets, reduce the risk of picking up a mooring line, and of course be more resilient if hitting a reef. The hull and deck are built with absolute strength in mind, and the wetted areas are laid and treated at the time of production in a way to eliminate the risk of osmosis.

The Island Packet 38 is a great favourite with a reputation that has preceded it the world over as the ideal blue-water cruising yacht for a small family, couple, or even single-handed sailor. Despite her 41’6” (38’ on deck), her interior is spacious and intelligently designed. Headroom tops out at 6 feet 4 inches. Large staterooms are located fore and aft, flanking the saloon. The fwd. head and sink have been removed to make a work/storage space. All the plumbing is still in place but as for many cruising owners,  having two heads on this size boat felt redundant, and was better used instead as a greatly needed storage/work space for toys and tools.

Below decks there are oversized hanging lockers, a bureau with chest of drawers, large settees, retractable table and a pull-out double berth. The U-shaped galley has an LPG range with oven, double deep sinks, large fridge / freezer, condenser, cutlery drawers, hot and cold water pressure and lots of natural light via overhead hatches and opening ports. Four Dorade vents assist ventilation. Another attribute of the IP 38 is its large tank capacity, with almost 600L of water which on Cape D is topped up when necessary with a 12V 80gal/day water-maker.

The 38 has a roomy cockpit with shower, folding swim ladder and cavernous lockers. The engine control panel has a protective cover. The visibility is very good all-around from the helm, which is mounted with a custom frame displaying the cruising electronics and instruments. The cockpit, if safe and well thought-off when at sea, transforms easily into a cosy and well-sized dining area when at anchor, with a lovely teak table and comfortable seats. Nonskid decking, double lifelines and full-length cabin-top rails suggest safety, while top-quality teak coamings and a caprail add touches of elegance. Mounted on the transom is a gleaming Monitor Wind Vane, a model used, tried and tested for decades by the most intrepid single-handed round-the-world sailors, and which will steer the boat through anything should the autopilot find the weather too fluky to be reliable, or should you wish to save on power.

The sail plan is one of the big assets of the Island Packet 38, with the strong, wide bowsprit adding extra sail area and enabling efficient use of the cutter-rig. Both Genoa and Staysail are on Furlers, and the main drops easily into the lazy-jacks. The lines are all ran aft to the cockpit for safety and ease of handling when short-handed.
