Bruce Roberts career in yacht design, started in the 1960’s in Australia and then North America in the early 1970’s. Bruce’s talents went into powerboats, sailboats and commercial craft utilising fiberglass, wood epoxy, steel and aluminum. Bruce’s plans provided both boat builders and dreamers a chance to build their own vessel, as to his designs. Something must have been right, for there are over 30,000 of his designs afloat today.

 

Sara J is a 36-foot cutter rig sloop, that was privately built. Though a conservative design, Sara J has proven her salt in these waters, effectively cruising the West Coast. 

 

Why Should You Buy This Boat?

 

Epoxy Construction - Think of WW2 and the RAF Mosquito with its reliability and success rate. This was effectively the beginning of wood construction with epoxy. Epoxy construction can take many forms, from traditional wood construction, to laminated veneers on a ribbed hull. What you have is a very stiff hull, light weight, and very hard for osmosis to occur. Sara J is in this category. A proven trans-oceanic boat construction technology with decades of success.

 

Windvane Steering – Sara J utilises an auxiliary rudder that works independent of the main rudder. For this to work, the main rudder is center lined and locked, and the apparent wind simply helm’s the boat via the airvane. This system uses no electricity, and there are no extra lines leading into the cockpit. The auxiliary rudder is neutral buoyant so it can simply be removed if desired. This is a fairly older yet still reliable technology, that came out in the 1960 OSTAR trans-Atlantic race and is still in use today.

 

Cutter Rig – The use of cutter rigs on offshore boats is proven. In lighter winds you can use both sails, and as the wind pipes up, you simply furl the larger genoa and use in the inner jib. 

 

Dorade Skylight – Now here is something that you do not see on modern yachts. A touch of class from a bygone era, that complements natural light, air exchange, and the existing brightwork. The skylight further ads charm to a suspended oil lamp above the main cabin.

 

Dickson Stove – This beefy unit will not only heat water but cook your food and provide a good source of dry heat. The only need for propane on this vessel is for the stern mount bbq.
