Many of you have read our write-ups of our Valiant offerings, and know our passion and our extensive knowledge of these famous, ocean proven yachts from the drawing board of our dear friend, the well-known yacht architect, Bob Perry. Each yacht is beautiful and world sailing capable, but seldom have we seen a trans-Atlantic veteran in such good condition and so extensively equipped for serious bluewater passages, with strength and safety considered foremost with anything the owner did to prepare “MOON RIVER” for hard core ocean sailing in all ocean conditions, as you will see when you inspect this fabulous offering of the Valiant 40, “MOON RIVER”!!!
“MOON RIVER” is in classic yachting fashion, loved, and so very well taken care of and she is equipped for extensive cruising and a gracious and elegant life for the liveaboard sailor and she is now on the brokerage market and accessible to prospective buyers who have serious long term cruising and passage making in their future sailing plans. “MOON RIVER” is truly a turn key opportunity and should be #1, on the short list of “must see yachts” for any serious sailor, contemplating the purchase of a world class cruising yacht.
There are MANY wonderful and adventurous stories about this renown yacht, to share with her new owners.
“MOON RIVER’S” sistership, Mark Schrader's VALIANT 40, "Resourceful" was the FIRST AMERICAN BOAT to circumnavigate via the five southern capes. She is capable of sailing through the harshest conditions, in the wildest or calmest oceans of the world!!!
“MOON RIVER” is a perfect example of a classic Perry offshore yacht, has proven offshore capabilities and was designed for blue water sailing. Naval Architect Bob Perry, has incorporated into this sturdy double ender, both seaworthiness and ample interior space that offers steady and comfortable cruising, and features the traditional or “CLASSIC” Valiant 40 layout, with lines that incorporate a tumble home stern, bulwarks, dorades, opening ports, oversize rigging and quality construction . The Valiant 40 is a modern classic. Performance has become synonymous with Valiant and is in no small way responsible for its success. SAIL Magazine selected the Valiant 40 as the ”Offshore Cruiser of the “Decade”, and Valiant’s induction into the Sailing Hall of Fame.
This is the layout, known WORLDWIDE as the look which made the Valiant 40 famous with sailors throughout the world and which has taken more sailors on circumnavigations, than any other production yacht.

ON ONE OF THE CLEANEST BOATS WE’VE EVER LISTED!!!
Sail Magazine wrote: “The Valiant 40 is a fast, offshore yacht. Her clean and efficient design gives her a remarkable ability to point high while footing fast and makes her safe, comfortable and exhilarating. She has a stable, easily driven hull powered by a close-winded, versatile rig.
Her hull features a modern split appendage, fin-keel and skeg-rudder combination. She has a graceful sheer rising to a flared bow and a salty, tumblehome canoe stern. Minimal overhangs fore and aft, coupled with canoe stern, contribute to a long-sailing length, with a bonus of increased space below decks. The bow flare is ample for a dry boat and it provides both a safe, workable foredeck and reserve buoyance to keep the bow from diving in a seaway. Likewise, the stern parts a following sea in the same fashion as a “double-ender” while adding sufficient reserve buoyancy to keep the boat dry and reduce the chance of pooping. There is also a moderate bustle development aft that increases the effective sailing length.
Without question, we feel that Valiant is the best-constructed production yacht in the United States, built for serious, appreciative yachtsmen. Valiant 40: THE ULTIMATE BLUEWATER PERFORMANCE CRUISER.”
She is a beautiful cutter capable of going anywhere in the world. She is fast, responsive and capable of living aboard in great comfort and eagerly awaiting a new owner to put her through her paces in the open ocean….where she belongs!
We are pleased once again, to be involved with this VALIANT 40 - No one knows the history of this VALIANT 40 and Valiant Yachts, better!
“MOON RIVER” HAS BEEN A PET FREE AND SMOKE FREE YACHT
IN THE OWNERS WORDS:
Moon River is a 1988 Texas-built (non-blister) Valiant 40. We bought her in 2010, wanting a boat that could comfortably, safely and swiftly take our family of four long-range cruising.
Since then, we have lived aboard for 18 months, home-schooled our daughters at the fold-out saloon table, and covered a good 30,000 miles. In four Atlantic crossings, and twice going up and down the US eastern seaboard, we encountered all the usual types of weather but never once had real drama. Moon River was just fulfilling her potential. This summer we cruised to Cape Cod and, time allowing, would have happily kept going.
Moon River has been set up to avoid marinas and expensive repair services. The boat is stripped down, simplified, and seaworthy. She's also a Valiant, with all the standard features, so naturally that means comfort and tons of space.
We requipped pretty much everything in 2010-13. There was another big requip in 2015, focusing on the mast and rigging. We do annual maintenance and incidental replacements constantly to ensure that everything is protected and that we can remain independent.
A speck of rust appears on the engine and it gets sanded and painted. Filters get replaced well before maximum hours. Winches are stripped and greased yearly. Thruhulls are dismantled and re-greased every year. The two diesel tanks are emptied and cleaned manually every year. Same with the water tanks. The halyards are taken down for storage every winter. Etc. The emphasis is on making the boat reliable, easy to fix, and safe.
Two seasons bottom paint (Petit HRT Premium) applied June 2020. In addition to list below, all the usual cruising gear: fenders, many mooring lines, emergency and day-to-day spares, BBQ, windscoop, fishing tackle, etc.
Dinghy is a Dyer Dhow with oars that fit inside of the dinghy and mast and sail.
Dyer Dhows are much sought after, something of a legend in the sailing dinghy world, as much as Valliant’s are in the cruising boat world. The boat is 9' long and the oars can lay down inside the dinghy. It weighs only about 105 lbs, which is considerably less than a 9' RIB, let alone one with an engine on it. Two people can pick up this dinghy without a problem. We have a custom made cradle to lift her up on deck. The oars are pine, light, well balanced and work very well in bronze oarlocks. You can put on a small outboard if you wish. The mast and sail are in perfect condition and we used this rig to cross bays and from large anchorages into marinas. Also worth noting that a Dyer lasts almost for ever with only occasional maintenance. I painted the hull inside and out. The gunwale (white oak) is new this year and this will last a couple decades.
I have all the paper charts and all the cruising guides you need for an Atlantic circuit: US east coast, Atlantic islands, Atlantic Europe (UK, France in particular), west Africa, Caribbean west and east, Bahamas. All dating from around 2013/14.
We sailed twice around the Atlantic and have no chart plotter, so this is an "everything you need" collection. Charts are mix of grey-scale reproductions by Bellingham Chart Printers, OceanGrafix, Imray, and UK Admiralty. Condition: used but all decent.
Details: around 50 full size charts plus each of the Maptech chart books covering the US east coast and chart books covering the Bahamas. Also a dozen cruising guides/pilot books.
I wrote a personal blog during some of our Atlantic trips. There are numerous pictures and stories about traveling on the boat. Here is the link.
MORE FROM THE LISTING BROKER:
Having been actively involved in the brokerage and new boat and brokerage yacht industry since the 1975, we have been fortunate to have been able to broker some very amazing and special yachts. Our specialty has always been quality bluewater passage makers, so we are very pleased and proud to have been appointed by an experienced and lifelong yachtsman, to offer his highly customized VALIANT 40’.
The Valiant 40 was designed by one of the more innovative and forward thinking yacht designers of the past century. Today, as a personal friend of Bob Perry, we often refer to him as “the father of the cruising yacht”. The yachts he designed and built have earned him a solid reputation among the best designers of the modern cruising sailing yacht.
Not only are all Valiants robustly built and comfortable, but all systems including the engine, electronics, spars and rigging are incorporated to enable a, short handed crew to make safe, round trip TRANS-OCEAN passages.
If you are in the market for a world renown, safe and comfortable long range passagemaker, you will find it well worth your while to give “MOON RIVER” a very thorough consideration and do plan on closely examining the many photos of this INCREDIBLE YACHT and ask the listing broker about a short video made by the owner of trade wind sailing”.
For the serious Valiant client, there are an additional 85 photos, too many too post, but available upon request.

This well cared for yacht, sleeps seven people in accommodations with the traditional tri-cabin layout with large private forward and aft staterooms and a spacious central salon and port side pull-out double settee. She was built as a very custom New England Herreshoff style interior which gives “MOON RIVER” an exceptionally clean, bright and light interior. Teak trim, cupboards, locker doors, trim and overhead battens are highly varnished as is the factory installed teak & holly floor. bulkheads, cabin sides and overhead is a light colored off-white laminate.
The main salon is open and inviting with large settees, (port pulls out to a double) providing for excellent and comfortable offshore sleeping quarters and a wide sole and numerous stowage areas.
The interior of the Valiant 40’ is dry, bright, comfortable and well ventilated with 11-screened opening ports, 4 large, opening hatches, a large companionway hatch, 2 dorades. All Valiants are styled with the heritage of the finest features found in the most sought after yachting accommodations and finished in furniture quality teak.
The overhead is drop-down Formica panels with teak battens for ease of installation and inspection of below deck fittings.
Most forward and aft of the chain locker, you will find the V-berth with filler cushion which makes for a commodious forward sleeping area, making the V-berth a true stateroom, storage lockers above berth to port and starboard and tremendous storage under the V-berth. There is a large opening hatch above the berth and 2 opening ports for great light and ventilation. The forward cabin is closed off by a teak door, giving complete privacy to guests or crew in the forward stateroom.
Next aft to port is a large head, with ample storage including, several lockers and cupboards. Ventilation is excellent, with opening port and overhead dorade in head. The forward bulkhead has a custom teak trimmed mirror which covers the entire area, adding even more light in the head area.
Directly across and to starboard are two very large, full length hanging lockers with bookshelves over. There is a opening port to starboard. All locker doors have louvered vents for air circulation.
Moving aft is the main salon which is located amidships with large comfortable settees to port and starboard, (ideal sea berths when on a passage) a custom bulkhead mounted, drop down teak trimmed table, for dining to port, or when opened fully, it becomes a double, full salon dining table.
Outboard and above settees are custom cabinets with bookshelves forward shelves on starboard and port side. The owner has put a custom system for tying nets to the shelves so that things stay in place in a seaway. There is a large opening hatch overhead and large opening ports. Storage is abundant, with large storage areas behind settees. Beautiful varnished teak & holly sole throughout. The spacious, central main salon is open and inviting with large settees, providing for comfortable berths at sea, a wide sole and numerous stowage areas.
Aft of the main salon and to starboard is a proper offshore, forward facing navigation station and chart table with tremendous room for the full compliment of navigation and electronic equipment for easy use while navigating. The large nav table has a large storage locker under the desk top, a deep locker and outboard, room for the additional electronic navigation and communication equipment. Also, there is a custom teak tray mounted at the front edge of the chart table for storage and easy access to navigation tools.
Just aft of the nav station and directly across from the galley are two huge lockers, one which provides a tremendous amount of space for provisions, the other, a large, full length wet locker. There is a teak grate built into the teak and holly sole, at the bottom of the companionway, to catch water from wet gear. With the wet locker and teak draining grate, which drains to the bilge, all foul weather gear is kept aft and away from the main living quarters. All locker doors are ventilated.
Aft of the main salon and to port, is the classic “wrap around” “U” shape configured, offshore safe galley, that will delight the gourmet, whether at sea or dockside. There is generous cabinet & counter space, 3 galley drawers, lockers under the sink, 1 locker outboard with custom tilt out trash bin, 2 large deep stainless steel sinks, 3-burner S.S. Force 10 Propane stove with Oven and Broiler. Over the galley is a large opening hatch and an opening port for light and ventilation. Above the sinks, you will find a large custom teak cabinet with shelves and dual opening doors.
There are extensive lockers and storage, outboard over stove and under counter, plus many custom storage features. The galley has a manual fresh and salt water system and huge provision locker. There is a large double, well insulated ice box athwartship with separate top opening lids.
The owner has also installed a fold up teak extension outboard on the frig end, that opens up to almost double the usable counter space for the chef.
Cabinetry and features throughout this beautifully designed yacht, far exceed the standard layout of this much sought after traditional, side entry Valiant, with the Captains quarters in the port double aft quarter berth. She is a famous “traditional layout” Valiant 40’ which has taken more sailors on circumnavigations, than any other yacht design ever built.
There are 11-opening ports and 4 opening deck hatches, plus the companionway hatch, which provides a tremendous amount of light and superior cross ventilation. There are also 2 Stainless Steel dorade vents, one over the head, one over the chart table. Below deck ventilation far surpasses the standards in the industry. This yacht incorporates beautiful teak and holly floor, screwed down and plugged in the traditional manner and a rich teak interior.
Below the water line, the hull shows a fine entry with a long cutaway forefoot followed by an efficient and modern keel section and a deep profile skeg hung rudder, just forward of a tapered stern section. This design combination readily separates the Valiant from other traditional yachts and offers ease of handling and lively performance.

The mooring is paid for until April. It's a very nice mooring too and can be upgraded to a berth if for an additional fee.
I have moved nearly all of these ashore into the marina locker. They are well organized and clean and ready to use. There is everything needed to go to sea tomorrow: spare hoses + clamps; basic electrics; halyards; sailcloth; repair materials like silicone sealant and all the different greases; spare oars; etc.
There is, in addition to the two anchors that are ready to go (one in bow, one in stern), a spare CQR anchor and 200' of rode. This rode is also in the shore locker now.
There are the filters, impeller and even a whole unused spare water pump for the Yanmar.
The boat is stocked up with: water (and new filter), diesel and propane gas.
Anchor chain: 5/8 h/t is only a couple years old.
Tiny offshore details that don't sound like much but they add up to help a lot:
1. Fittings in place so you can easily put nets up over the main cabin shelves
2. Red stripe at top of mast (in picture you can see how well this makes the mast stand out among other masts)
3. On the stern, attached to the Monitor frame, you will see a coiled green line. This is my custom made emergency 'steps' for getting back on board in case you should fall over, even at an anchorage, without the ladder down and no one to help you. It is almost impossible to climb aboard from sea level on any boat, and I consider this little line of mine, which has two foot loops, a vital life-saving precaution.
