In 1988 when "Bodacious" was commissioned, Sailing World rated the Sabre 42 the #1 U.S. production sailboat based on Quality finish below, excellent interior/cabin, deck & cockpit layout, and superb handling characteristics. Easily crewed by 2, her Annapolis-based owners have cruised Penobscot Bay from Tenants Harbor for years, with their family and friends. Her innovative aft-cabin layout with berths for seven and 2 heads will make this a desired choice for those seeking both sailing performance and superior private accommodations.
Bodacious sleeps seven in a comfortable (6'5" headroom) three cabin layout (6'6" berths). The fore and aft double cabins have private access to heads w/showers. In the main cabin there is one settee berth to starboard and a settee berth to port that converts to a double. The galley has a double sink, Raritan heat exchanger water heater; a safgas CNG gimbaled 4 burner stove and oven, and a Sea Frost refrigerator & freezer. The fully cushioned cockpit (8'9") has excellent visibility forward, is protected from the sun with a dodger and bimini, and has a folding Edson pedestal table perfect for cocktails and meals.
Stepping aboard the Sabre 42 is impressive with the spacious cockpit and helm station with loads of storage areas, Navigation equipment, self tailing winches, and cockpit cushions. Nice wide decks to move forward and aft; wood handrails, stainless dorades, and all the way forward a windlass to help the crew pull up the anchor. Although some lines still lead to the mast, most lead back to the cockpit for easier short handed sailing.
The swim ladder comes out of the middle of the aft pulpit and at the helm station, there are twin lazarettes. In the Port side lazarette is the panel for the engine switch and shutdown as well as access to the steering quadrant. On Starboard is also abundant storage and access to the quadrant as well. An additional locker on starboard is used for storing the Natural Gas containers and propane canisters for a gas grill.
The port cockpit locker is shallow since below is the Aft Cabin, but it is sufficient to hold dock lines and miscellaneous gear. The Starboard Cockpit locker is huge with a section for the Hot/Cold Cockpit shower faucet, a convenient shelf, and the autohelm and valve for the aft head discharge valve.
In the cockpit is also a connection for hooking up to an outside water source.
Going down the companionway, the Nav station is on the starboard side. Facing aft, you face the main electrical panel. There is plenty of storage space under the nav desk top, outboard of the nav seat and under the desk. Just forward on starboard is a very comfortable couch seating for 2 to 3 people with storage lockers behind. Across the cabin on the port side is a large "L' shaped seating area where a fold down table can drop down for serving the meals. Again there are storage areas along the back of the couch.
Just aft on port is the L shaped Galley with plenty of counter space. 2 burner stove and oven, top load refrigeration cutting board and double sink. More cabinet space along back of the galley counter.
Aft of the galley is access to the aft cabin on the port side. This cabin has a very large and comfortable double bed with storage lockers and hanging closet for clothes and gear. It also has a private entrance to the aft head (on the starboard side) from the aft cabin.The aft head has a separate area for showering and a curtain to keep the head as dry as possible and extra storage areas for personal gear.
Forward of the main cabin on port is the forward head with a sink and pull-out shower head. Across from the head is a hanging locker, shelf, and storage lockers for more gear. The forward vee berth has an insert if you choose to make her a very large double bed.
The engine is a Westerbeke 46 horse power engine which lives under the Galley sink with access from the galley (to get to the back of the engine); from the starboard side (virtually the whole engine is accessible), and under the seat of the L settee (to the front of the engine).

The Mainsail is fully battened with lazy jacks for easy furling and stowing away.

The aft facing Nav station includes CD Player, GPS, Raymarine ST-60 Plus Graphic, and VHF Marine Transceiver. The helmsman's station includes: Raymarine E-120 radar & Chart plotter with GPS receiver (2011); Raymarine ST-60 wind, depth, and speed; and a Ritchie Navigator pedestal-mounted Magnetic Compass.
