Black Swan is a Midnight Lace 52 express cruiser built in 1985. The Midnight Lace boats are the classic and best known design of Tom Fexas. This design is Tom’s modern interpretation of the famed commuter yachts that used to ply the waters of Long Island Sound and the Hudson River in the 1920’s and 30’s. Only thirteen 52’s were built and of those only two were the express model. Black Swan is the only one with extensive teak and mahogany exterior trim and a customized interior, making it a one of a kind vessel. Designed with a four to one length to width ratio Black Swan slips through the water with a level and economical ride. The vessel is a dream to handle, turns on a dime, and is easy to single hand. In fact the owner has singled handed Black Swan from Maine to the Bahamas.

Black Swan has had only one owner in her 31 years and although the interior was originally custom designed by Tom Fexas it has since been modified and updated to enhance its cruising amenities. Some of these changes include an office / navigation station, new driving station instrument panel, a hardtop with hatch over the driving station, new master bed and headboard, L shaped settee with expandable mahogany table, bookcases, drawers, Herreshoff style overheads in the main salon and master stateroom, bamboo flooring and many other improvements. All professionally done. She is equipped with a complete array of up to date electronics.

Beyond her annual upkeep and improvements in October 2015 her black hull was peeled, epoxied , faired and awlgripped. In June of 2014 in order to remove years of bottom paint the bottom was sandblasted. It was then given the complete epoxy bottom treatment even though the boat had never had blisters.

Black Swan has cruised from Toronto to the Turks and Caicos, turning heads wherever she goes. As the saying goes "life is too short to own an ugly boat". This is truly a classic vessel that will never be outdated.

Layout: Forward is the master cabin with a double berth and access to the forward cockpit. Aft of that on the port side is the head with a shower, sink and small tub. Two years ago the waste system was converted to an “Airhead” composting toilet. This has proven to be a fantastic system. No odor, no pumping out, no holding tank, no overboard discharge and no chance of violating any Coast Guard rule. Opposite the head on the starboard side is a single cabin. Aft of that cabin is a custom made office space with a desk that can also be a navigation station. This arrangement includes several drawers including a drawer set up for hanging files. Opposite this space to port is the galley.

Two steps up from this level and encompassing the balance of the enclosed space of the boat is the main saloon. This spacious area includes a dinette area with a custom mahogany table and also a couch that can be converted to a double bed. There are two bar stools facing the counter above the galley. Exiting the door aft brings you to the aft cockpit with built in seating. The driving station is raised above this area for complete visibility and a custom made hardtop has a sliding hatch so you can even drive with your head out above the hardtop.

The teak transom has a full width teak swim platform attached. A stainless steel ladder with Starboard steps leads from the swim platform to the aft deck.

Storage: There is an incredible amount of storage space spread out around the boat including drawers, cabinets, three hanging lockers, chart drawers, food storage areas and spare parts bins.

New in 2019: Electric engine hatch openers and a new windlass.
