The sole purpose of such a classic design as the Tayana 42’ is to sail all the oceans of the world and enter the most distant and dreamt of world ports. In the tradition of the Valiant 40, Pacific Sea Craft 40, Westsail 42,Tashiba and Baba ….all well known offshore sailing yachts, esteemed Yacht Designer Robert Harris, designed into this yacht, a true cutter rig, modified fin keel, skeg hung rudder, offshore safe cockpit and an interior meant for comfortable living, whether at sea or dockside.
He has incorporated into this sturdy double ender, both seaworthiness and ample interior space that offers steady and comfortable cruising. “KOKOPELLI” is a perfect example of a classic offshore design featuring an Aft Cockpit and incorporating a canoe stern, ALUMINUM SLOTTED TOE RAIL, dorades, opening ports, oversize rigging and quality construction as well as having one of the warmest, roomiest, most comfortable interiors available in a 42’ cruising yacht.
Built for living aboard and cruising she has a good sized head, teak cabin soles and custom, solid teak staving, along with huge berths and plenty of light and ventilation. Numerous lockers and drawers easily store an abundance of cruising gear. She features GLASS DECKS and is a much coveted STEP DECK, KEEL STEPPED MAST VERSION of this classic Tayana 42' and is even more sought after, because of her CLASSIC FORWARD PULLMAN BERTH.
The hull lines are fine, both at entry and exit; the modified fin keel is long and set well aft, providing for a quick, easily driven hull. There are no hard corners or big flat areas for the sea to hit. “KOKOPELLI” is a true cutter rig. This design combination readily separates the Tayana 42’ from other traditional yachts and offers ease of handling and lively performance. The Tayana 42’ was reviewed by designer Robert H. Perry in his "Sailing Designs" Book, (Port Publications, 1980), even before the first boat came off the production line. It is best described by Bob Perry's original quote, "The concept [of the Vancouver 42] is to provide a yacht, that is particularly suited to long offshore passages with little or no compromising in the direction of the production, an all purpose yacht." Further, "The Tayana 42 is built by the Ta Yang Yacht Building Company in Taiwan. Ta Yang has the reputation of being one of the most reliable and consistent yards in the orient. With the direction of Mr. Harris, they should produce a good product."

IN THE OWNERS WORDS:
We bought Kokopelli in late 1994 in Charlestown, SC, trucked her cross country to Los Angeles, CA in early 1995. Over the next year plus, we fitted her for cruising and did several shake down trips to Catalina Island. April 1997 we sailed to Mexico where we spent a year. The next year we spent in Costa Rica and Panama, going through the Panama Canal in April 1999. We spent about 2 months in the San Blas Islands before heading east.
Kokopelli brought us to Cartegena, Colombia July 1999. Between Oct and Dec 1999 we traveled from Cartagena to Trinidad; through Aruba, Curacau, Bonaire, Venezuela, and finally into Chagaramas Bay, in Trinidad. This passage is described as one of the 10 most difficult passages in the world downwind. Kokopelli did this upwind with help from the weather. Since 2000, Kokopelli has been up and down island many times, stored for 2 hurricane seasons in Puerto Rico, 10 hurricane seasons in English Harbour, Antigua, and 3 hurricane seasons in St Martin. She was re-rigged in St Thomas, repainted in Antigua, had a new mainsail made in St Martin, and the chainplates replaced in St Martin. She's been sailed 6 months every year while in the Carribean, she's not a dockside queen, she is, a proven ocean going thoroughbred. .
ACCOMMODATIONS & LAYOUT:
The beautiful joinery has classic Tayana solid teak staving throughout. All doors are beveled and hand fitted, and the lockers are teak lined. The interior is finished with a satin varnish. Teak cabinet doors are louvered. Headroom is 6’4” or better throughout the boat and storage capacity can only be noted as “incredible” in a 2-cabin, custom layout including her CLASSIC FORWARD PULLMAN BERTH. All opening ports, hatches and the companionway are screened.
“KOKOPELLI” sleeps up to six people, two in the forward Pullman berth cabin, 2 in the main salon and 2 in the quarter cabin. The unique forward Pullman cabin design has a large Pullman berth to port, with starboard devoted to abundant lockers, seating area and storage. Under the Pullman berth are large drawers, and storage behind the drawers.
The port head is just aft of the Pullman-berth, with pressure hot and cold shower, hot and cold vanity and generous locker space. Directly across from the head to starboard, you will note a bank of 3 full length storage lockers with louvered doors and shelf over.
Next aft is the main saloon which features a port settee with drawers under and storage behind cushions and louvered storage cabinets above. To starboard, there is a "L" shaped settee with beautiful teak dining table with folding leaf. Behind is further storage behind and below cushions, bookshelves and lockers outboard.
Up two steps aft is a large port side, forward facing chart table and navigation station. The teak nav table/desk has generous storage under the desktop, plus 3-shelves behind a louvered door alongside the hull. Under the navigation seat is more storage space. Aft of the Nav seat is a large wet hanging locker with shelf over, followed by a quarter berth, a perfect offshore safe berth, where the "offwatch" crew can readily hear and assist the helmsman.
To starboard, is the classic “wrap around”, “U” shape configured, offshore galley, that will delight the gourmet, whether at sea or dockside, with drawers, extensive louvered lockers, large dry storage bins, refrigerator and storage door under. There is a deep double stainless steel sink, fully gimbaled 4-burner stove in a lined stainless steel compartment, and generous counter space, over cabinets and over/under counter stowage. There are opening ports over the stove area for added ventilation, making a total of 2-galley opening and screened ports, plus the companionway for light and air. The companionway steps access 3 hinged storage areas under the steps.

There are separate house & engine battery systems that do not connect. Separate alternators, charging separate battery banks. BUT, above the house batteries are parallel switches in the cabinet at the Nav. Sta for connecting the banks. The house bank can be split into bank 1 and bank 2 using the panel switch, but the owners always leave them as a combined (BOTH) bank. The parallel switches are labeled (PAR 1 or PAR 2). Either can be used to combine all the batteries, engine and house banks. The anchor windlass runs on the engine battery bank system as does the remote oil pump-out system.

The topsides of “KOKOPELLI”, features a large unobstructed deck and cabin top, in this beautiful "Step-Deck" model of the Tayana 42. Safe & secure deck work is ensured with raised bulwarks, double fastened, extra heavy stanchion bases with double lifelines, teak handrails on coachroof and heavy stainless steel mast guards. The large and comfortable cockpit is self-bailing with oversized scuppers, designed for heavy weather sailing. Companionway has both offshore slide in slats, either wood or lexan and double louvered door for dockside living. Excellent visibility from all positions is consistent with the proven offshore capability that the sailing world expects from a serious bluewater yacht.
