Dreamspeaker ll is a wonderful ketch. What’s your dream? Perhaps she might help you catch it! For the past few years she has led her current owner to the mysteries and wonders of the British Columbian coast. From the south coast to the Broughtons to Bute Inlet.
Here is a bit of her history.
Built and first owned by ex-Kiwi David Johnston. Built to a Frank Carus design at Richmond, BC. Johnston - owner of FCI Industries (Ferro Cement Industries) a highly respected builder of docks, pontoons and other ferro-cement products.
1974 – Hull layed-up and 1st survey by Boyd, Phillips & Company Ltd., Vancouver.
1980 - Pre-Launch Survey for insurance purposes by Ross Sea Marine Ltd., Delta, BC
June 13th launched off Sceptre Dredging Ltd.premises.
1981 – Registered O.N. 371218 (Blue Book Boat) as Tai Haruru ( Maori for “Sound of the Sea”.
Commissioned same year.
1981-1993 – Owned by D. Johnston.
- 1981 Sailed Canada to New Zealand via Western Pacific..
- 1982 Sailed New Zealand coast.
- 1983 Sailed lower central Pacific circumnavigation.
- 1984 Sailed New Zealand coast.
- 1985/86 Sailed New Zealand to Canada via Cape Horn, Caribbean and Panama Canal. Subsequently used for skippered charter in BC.
1993 – Bought by Robert Estabruck Campbell River, BC.
- No survey carried out. Never insured. Never chartered.
- Renamed Dreamspeaker ll.
- Upgraded/refurbished sailing limited to local waters
- 1999 upgraded and refurbished again with plans to sail away that never came to fruition.
2002 – Purchased by Robert Millington.
- Surveyed by Tony Repard Associate Marine Surveyors Ltd.. Insured by Dolphin Insurance. Made seaworthy and prepared for ocean voyage.
- 2003 – Oct./Nov. sailed Campbell River to Panama.
- 2004 - March/June sailed Panama to Campbell River. 2005-2013 used for live-aboard by owner 9 months of the year. Kept seaworthy and sailed local waters.

Dreamspeaker ll was professionally built by David Johnston of Ferro Cement Industries, It is of Caravel construction with clipper bow and counter stern. The hull and deck are all of ferro cement with heavy re-enforcement of ¼” (80,000 PSI) high tensile cold drawn welded rod as well as high tensile welded mesh. The superstructure is made of painted marine plywood and teak trim. It has a full keel with a large cutaway forefoot, skeg hung rudder and round chines. The keel was laid in 1973 and launched in 1980.
Very generous accommodations are provided in Dreamspeaker ll. A chain locker forward followed by a sail locker, enclosed head and shower and a stateroom on each side of a passageway. This is followed by a large salon with a large seating and table forward followed aft by a U-shaped galley port side with appliances opposite starboard. A partial aft bulkhead has steps leading up to the pilothouse helm with full instrumentation and electronics centered and a large navigation table starboard. The partial aft bulkhead has steps leading up to the deck and down to the master stateroom and head which occupy all of the back end of Dreamspeaker ll.
The deck is nicely laid and provides easy movement from stem to stern.
The ketch rigging has all aluminum spars with dual spreaders on the main mast and a single on the mizzen.
Dreamspeaker ll is a capable offshore cruiser and/or a well built Pacific West Coast cruiser.
1 CQR 140 pound anchor. Secured on starboard side with teak bowsprit. 300 feet of of 1/2 inch galvanized chain.
1 CQR 140 pound anchor. Secured on port side with teak bowsprit. 100 feet of 1/2" galvanized chain and 120 feet of double braid rode.
1 S2000 spare anchor.
Ideal vertical windlass with gypsy, capstan and up switch. Run by 2 6 volt batteries dedicated to the forespeak.
Hood Profurl roller furling main head stay with 7/16" (removable) inner forestay and 3/8" S/S wire staysail as well as 1/2" split backstay for main mast. 3/8: intermediate backstay and running backstay, The mizzen is supported by the triatic stay to main 5/16" S/S wire backstay to the stern.
14 mm main shroud with 3/8" upper intermediate and 1/2"lower intermediate. The mizzen has 5/16" main shroud with intermediate.
