FAQ
two jib sheet winches in the cockpit, and one main sheet winch next to the stern companion way.
All halyards, main, jib, and cutter sails are raised by winches on the mast.
Anchors are three, 40 lb. BULLWAGGA on high strength 250’ of 5/16 chain, 40 lb. Danforth on 50’ chain and 200’ 5/8 nylon rope, 30llb. Danforth Stern anchor on 10’ chain and 100’ nylon rode.
Sails were bought new from Doyle in 2014.The main is a Doyle Stackpack. The Jib is a 130% sail on the Shaefer roller furler. The Cutter sail is old and hanks on the inner stay. We also have a full set of storm sails old but never used
Dutchess was surveyed in August 2012 for insurance purposes. This was before the hard top was installed in 2013. The market value at that time was found to be $137,000. This allowed me to insure it for $100,000. With a change in insurance she is now insured for $99,000.
-What is the height under the Bimini top. The clear height under the hard top which totally covers the center cockpit is 7 feet.
-does she have air in both cabins and how old is it. The Marine Air Conditioner is by Webasto Reverse Cycle ,12000 BTU heating or cooling and AC powered so can only be used at the dock.. It is only ducted into the center salon but it could be ducted to the stern cabin. It was bought from Defender on 2/13/15 and installed that year.
-is she still cutter rigged. Yes but the self tacking boom was removed as too dangerous at the suggestion of a rigger. The Cutter sail is hancked on and raised at the mast with a winch and controlled by sheets run to the cockpit. The Cutter sail came with the boat so age is unknown but serviceable.
-how old are the sails and roller furling. The sails are from Doyle, the jib is Doyle Durasail RF Genoa, 135% with foam luff &tell-tale. With a green Sunbrella UV cover. Bought in 2/13/2015. It rolls on a Sheafer 3100 roller furler bought on 1/30/06.
-shape of running rigging. Good serviceable shape dates from 2006 and newer.
-any signs of leakage. Slight leak at mast partner will be fixed shortly. Owner installed Spartite 2000 mast wedge replacement system 2 small kits in 2/5/16 added 3rd kit in 2020.
Other FAQ

-what kind of auto pilot does she have. It is a SIMRAD Autopilot running a hydraulic pump and piston.
-how old is the frig and freezer. The boat has separate refrigerator and freezer both running on 12 volt. They are ISOTHERM models by Indel Marine, the freezer is an Cruise 63, the fridge is a Cruise 130. Purchased in 3/31/2011 from Defender.
Dinghy motor: LEHR outboard motor. The LEHR is 5 HP propane powered and it has a 15 lb fiberglass propane fuel tank. No dinghy is included.
-age of solar panels. There are two different sets of solar panels. Two 40 amp ridged and two 50 amp flexible. The ridged are mounted on the radar arch and the flexible are mounted on the hard top. Looking for ages estimate hard panel bought in 2012, soft panel 2014.
The Dutchess Restoration Story
THE YACHT “DUTCHESS” DUTCHESS Is a 1977 CSY 44 WO (Caribbean Sailing Yacht). She has a length of 44’, beam of 14’ and draws 5’ and an empty weight of 36,000 pounds. The boat was totally and professionally restored at the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club (PYC) by the owner over 8 years from 2003 to 2011. All efforts were made to conform to modern ABYC standards. I could not have restored DUTCHESS without the encouragement and help of PYC. The Hardtop was constructed and installed in 2013. It is made of 1” honeycomb core and multiple layers of fiberglass with epoxy and then painted with Awlgrip paint . It is enclosed with green cloth and plastic windows with zippers. Dutchess has completed the Great Loop and many side trips. She runs very economically at about a gallon of diesel per hour or six miles. The 100 gallon fuel tank gives her an easy 500 mile range. The keel was shortened from 6.5’ to 5’ in 2015 in accordance with CSY directions, which makes DUTCHESS conform to the shallow draft version of the CSY 44. Dutchess sleeps a total of six, in 2 cabins (2 each) and 2 berths (1 each) in the center salon. The cabins each have a marine head and a shower in the stern head. The restoration involved the following; At Oriental NC in before bringing the boat north, 1. Rebuilt Rudder, 2. Installed new wet exhaust hose, 3. Cleaned out 100 gallon diesel tank, 4. Installed twin primary diesel fuel filters, 5. Cleaned out and sanitized the two 200 gallon water tanks, 6. Installed new 24x15 bronze 3 blade propeller At PYC over 8 years, 1. Below the water line the hull was stripped of old paint and gel coat down to the fiberglass with a rotary peeler, washed hull and let dry, coated hull with 4 coats of clear INTERLUX Epoxy, 4 coats of Interlux Barrier paint 3000, and then bottom paint. 2. Removed teak gunnel planks, routed out the hull to deck joint and filled joint with epoxy and fiberglass which solidly attached hull to deck. In place of the teak I installed new aluminum perforated rails ordered from France, bedded in G-Flex epoxy and fastened with SS screws and bolts. 3. Extended rub rails 1” to better protect the sides. Installed aluminum strip on rub rails. 4. The entire boat, hull and deck was painted with Ivory colored AWLGRIP. 5. I removed the old Perkins Diesel engine. and installed a new 65 HP Cummins Diesel with a rebuilt Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission. Had the 1.5” shaft checked for straightness and magnafluxed. I installed a dripless mechanical packing on the shaft and on reinforced shaft log. 6. Stripped all the wood out of the salon down to fiberglass hull. Removed wood mast step and refrigerator box. Rebuilt all wood in salon and installed new 12volt refrigerator and new 12volt freezer. 7. Replaced all of the 6 foam bunk mattresses with 4” foam and cloth covers. 8. Removed all electric wiring and installed new ABYC wiring throughout the boat. 9. Removed cable steering system and replaced with hydraulic steering 10. Installed two 40-gallon polypropylene holding tanks (total 80 gallons) that receive the black water from the toilets and gray water from the galley sink. 11. I installed new toilets “Thetford Comfort Mate” in the heads and they flush with fresh water or gray water from the sinks with “Whale” diaphragm pumps pumping to the holding tanks. 12. Installed a complete SIMRAD electronic system including: a. Radar b. Chart plotter c. Depth sounder with temperature and knot meter d. Wind speed and wind direction e. Autopilot with hydraulic pump and 2” by 12” hydraulic piston 13. Bought new sails from Doyle, new roller Jib and new “Stack Pack Main”. The main goes up a new “Strong Track” for easy handling. As part of the sale, I will deliver the boat anywhere on the water on the East Coast, Gulf Coast and Great Lakes with the new owner and friends as crew. Dutchess and I have cruised all these waters. Equipment List; ANCHORING: ANCHORS: Dutchess has 3 anchors, primary anchor is a 44lb BULWAGGA with 250 feet of 5/16G4 hot-dipped galvanized steel chain, secondary is a 40lb DANFORTH TYPE with 50 feet of 5/16 G4 hot-dipped galvanized chain and 200 feet of 5/8 Nylon 8 plaited rope, stern anchor is a 30lb Danforth with 12 feet of 3/8 Stainless chain and 200 feet of ½” nylon braided rope.
