"Explorer II" is a new listing as of 7/16/2021. Beautiful condition, a must see for a serious cruiser.
"SV Explorer II" is an Alden-designed Boothbay Explorer. Her classic lines and head-turning beauty draws attention whatever harbor she visits.
Explorer II was built in 1977 at the Hodgson Brothers Boat Yard in Boothbay Maine. Her early years were spent in freshwater on Lake Michigan. The second and current owners, USCG Master Captain John Schroeder and his wife Jane Hawkey, are experienced sailors who purchased Explorer II in 2009. John has built and restored boats, big and small, for decades and has maintained and upgraded Explorer II to a high standard of seaworthiness. For 12 years, they have sailed her from the Gulf of St Lawrence, the entire US East Coast, and the Bahamas in comfort and safety.
Explorer II is a strong and solidly built fiberglass ketch with a traditional full keel that can be sailed or motor-sailed with a 135 HP Perkins diesel in any weather conditions. In addition, the fully enclosed and spacious center cockpit helm station and the multiple sail configurations are easily handled by just two persons (or even solo as Captain John has done).
The features of Explorer II:
Due to a 63’ main mast and shoal draft, Explorer II is can transit the Intercoastal Waterway from Maryland to Florida.
COMFORT and LUXURY:
The teak brightwork throughout the interior is stunning and the layout typical of Alden’s attention to detail.
The bright salon has a large dining table and gas fireplace that provides a cozy setting even on a cold day.
Through an interior passageway (past the engine room) is the beautiful en-suite master bedroom with 4 portholes and large full bath, and ample storage. It also provides an exit to the aft deck.
Going forward from the salon is the galley which is located on the center starboard side of the main mast and at lowest point of the vessel. This feature provides steady and pleasurable meal preparations in any sea conditions. The large refrigerator and freezer boxes are accessed from the front and positioned low so that food stays put when the doors are opened.
On the center port side of the mast is the mid-ship ensuite stateroom with full bath, consisting of two bunk beds, hanging closet and lots of drawers for storage.
Going forward to the bow is the third stateroom, consisting of two bunks and a half bath (perfect for kids), lots more storage and access to the chain locker.
With three staterooms, Explorer II lends itself well to families or even charter while affording maximum privacy and comfort.
In 2020 John completely refitted Explorer II. This included a new engine, generator, refrigeration, air-conditioning systems, new hot water heater, as well as extensive remodeling of the engine compartment. In addition, on deck, new rigging was installed including turnbuckles and included an inspection of all chain plates. All cabin tops and decks were refinished with Awlgrip. The exterior teak brightwork was stripped and re-varnished with Epifane.
Seller was asked a few questions below:
Can you tell me more about the dingy and outboard, davit load rating, sail age and more about the engine, new, rebuilt or remanufactured?
Dinghy is alum body inflatable, 9.5’, ~6yrs old, OB is a Yamaha 15HP Enduro, about same age.
Davit capacity is ~800 lbs.
Main, mizzen, genoa and inner jib are new in 2018. Spinnaker is 2019 Quantum top-down furler.
Engine was remanufactured by TransAtlantic Diesel in 2019.
Last oil changes to engine and gen, last bottom paint and cutlass bearing, running rigging last replaced?
Oils changed in June 2021.
Bottom repainted 2020 and bearing replaced then.
Running rigging has been replaced as needed
Hull construction, deck construction….Any thing that is not working aboard or needs service?
Hull is solid glass to the waterline, above waterline and deck is balsa cored.
At this time, wind speed indicator needs installation.
