The Westsail 32 is probably the most recognizable and well known bluewater vessel in its class. The Westsail 32 has something of a cult following among the bluewater fraternity. Her lines convey not only beauty, but most of all seaworthiness. The lines come from the Norwegian Colin Archer lifeboats of the early 20th century, which were borrowed by William Atkin and translated into a 32ft double-ender in 1928. Bill Crealock, later known for his Crealock/Pacific Seacraft designs, adapted Atkin’s design for GRP construction, and the result was the Westsail 32. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s Suhaili, on which he won the 1967-68 Golden Globe singlehanded race, was also built to Atkin’s design and is a close sister to the Westsail 32.
The Westsail Corporation produced W32s in Newport Beach, California, from 1971 until 1981. Later a second facility in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina also produced W32s. Approximately 834 were built, about half of them in kit form. "Coconut" is hull #116, she was built in the original yard in Newport Beach, California, and she was completed in that yard as a factory-finished yacht.
The "W32", as they are often referred to, was very heavily built and has taken many people on trouble-free voyages and many notable circumnavigations. The most recent I know of was a nonstop solo-circumnavigation in a Westsail 32 by American, Jerome Rand. While in the treacherous and fast developing lows of the Southern Ocean, Rand suffered two major knockdowns. Each time the sturdy Westsail bobbed upright again and sailed on, a testament to the boat’s construction and design and the preparation that had gone into the voyage.
"Coconut" is a solid seaworthy vessel that has seen very light use in the last ten years. She is equipped with 38-hp Perkins 4-107 Diesel which has only 2023 hours on it and is in very good condition. The cockpit and engine compartment below the cockpit with large opening hatch are in immaculate condition. The interior is in average condition, and with a few small projects she could be restored to her original glory. The seller is realistic and willing to work out a fair deal. He's ready to see her in the hands of her next captain and onto her new adventure.
The Westsail 32 is actually 39'11 LOA with her bowsprit and boomkin. The best point of sail is a beam to broad reach between 90 to 120 degrees off the wind with an optimal heal angle of 20 degrees, with good trade winds owners report the boat is capable of 7 knots which is its hull speed.
