Moonflower is one of only two Hillyard 16 tonners , designed by Denis Collingford and built at David Hillyard's famous yard at Littlehampton in Sussex in 1972. The hull is 1 inch carvel planking of iroko below the waterline and at stem and stern. The rest is mahogany. The oak frames are laminated 1 ¾ x 1 ¼ ins with every 3rd one 2 5/8. They are 7 ¼ ins centred copper fastened.
Moonflower is offered for sale at a bargain price as she is in need of a new owner who is willing to bring her back to life. The present owner was taken ill 5 years ago and has therefore been unable to carry out any routine maintenance work for some time.
In 2014 the hull below the waterline was stripped down, caulked with cotton and payed with 3M 5500. The hull was then repainted. Note the pictures of the work being carried out. The cast iron keel was shot blasted and epoxied.
As can be seen the exterior varnish is in need of work however the hull and laid decks are sound. The condition of the interior is generally good apart from a small leak in the aft cabin. The engine's condition is good and when in commission it was regularly serviced by a qualified engineer. Under engine alone the maximum speed is 5 - 6 knots. The propeller is coarse pitched for motor sailing and maneuvering in dock.
Although normally ketch rig, there is also a jib and staysail which can be rigged in place of the genoa to make the rig a cutter as originally intended.
Moonflower is equipped with beaching legs to enable her to take the ground if required.
Moonflower has been cruised widely in UK and continental waters including appearance at the Douarnenez Festival of Sail followed by a cruise to Spain.
As one has come to expect in a Hillyard design the accommodation is comfortable and elegant, with many oil lamps and Stovax cabin stove.
In the fore cabin there are two bunks, a Thetford Porta Potti toilet, and a wash basin and shower both with hot and cold water.
In the saloon the two settees can also be used as berths. The saloon table can seat up to six persons. There is a full size chart table with a Waeco Coolmatic fridge below.
There are two further berths in the aft cabin which with an infill creates a double berth. There is a hanging locker, and a separate heads compartment equipped with a Baby Blake sea toilet and a pull out wash basin with hot and cold water.
The galley is equipped with a gimballed gas cooker with two burners, grill and oven, a stainless steel sink with hot and cold water and sink. There is ample stowage .
We feel that it is vital that this lovely vessel is put back into commission in good order and be able give pleasure to a new owner.
