Camper & Nicholsons launch (1969) with single Yanmar 4BY Y2-180 (new 2018)
Formerly ‘UGLY DUCK’, now ‘JEMIMA (PUDDLE DUCK) ‘, this fine Gentleman’s Launch was built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1970 , now with a Yanmar 4BY Y2-180 Diesel engine (new in 2018 and no hours since testing) and 4 wheel ‘DeGraffe’ trailer. She has considerable provenance, having a very interesting history, being the owners launch for the largest private yacht in the British Empire from 1939-1953 MY ‘SHEMARA’ . The current owner has carried out considerable restoration including a new engine in 2018, new timber flooring (reclaimed from the dance floor at the officer;s Mess, Bovington), new helmsman navigator seats, hull repaint, new cockpit cover, new cabin cushions and much more. Ready for this season and viewings are highly recommended.

Fondly known as Ugly Duck, I bought her in November 2015.
Having been in store for some considerable time at the old Brooke Yachts Yard in Lowestoft, She was brought to Lake Yard Shipyard by lorry, to find a new owner. She was in a sorry state and needed a considerable amount of restoration work.
I took the decision to remove the old engines and replace them with one single engine of a similar horse power. I was advised that the Yanmar 4BY Y2 – 180 would be the ideal replacement. I agreed to this suggestion and in the spring of 2018, she was moved to Cobbs Quay for the work to be carried out. The engine bay was reconfigured and transom strengthened as necessary to accommodate the new power unit. The engine was installed, with a new outdrive, new engine batteries, new controls, steering etc
She had a truly interesting provenance as being the owners launch on MY Shemara. Shemara measuring 201ft and weighing 878 tons built by J I Thornycroft and Co in 1939 was the largest private yacht in the British Empire prior to the launch of Britannia in 1953.
Shemara was originally owned by Sir Bernard Docker, the flamboyant chairman of BSA. When he sold her to Harry Hyams in 1969, another truly interesting gentleman. The owners launch, (now Trivial Persuit, see Classic Boat April 2004) was deemed unfit for purpose, so ‘Ugly Duck’ was commissioned. It is believed that Sir Bernard Docker and Harry Hyams shared the cost of construction. One of the requirements of Harry Hyams, was that he should be able to stand in the saloon wearing his Top Hat on the occasions that he was invited on board Britannia.
Ugly Duck arrived in my shed early January 2016. I and a few helpers removed all the rotten timbers and flooring, we rubbed down the awful paint work on the hull and started on the varnish work. She came with a substantially constructed overall cover. No doubt for when she was on the davits of Shemarar she needed protection.
New timbers were inserted and new flooring was made in the cockpit. The timber used for the cockpit floor was reclaimed from the dance floor at the Officer’s Mess, Bovington. New helmsman and navigator seats were installed.
The rubber fendering which was perished was removed and a new rubbing strake added.
She was repainted, the same colour blue with Epiphanes Gloss and all the brightwork given 4-5 coats of Epiphanes gloss varnish. The bilges all cleaned and repainted as was the engine bay.
A new cockpit cover was made that cleverly slides forward of the windscreen when lowered. New cabin cushions were also made and a cover over the engine hatch.
2 new 12volt batteries for domestic use fitted, a fuel guage and engine hour meter. A new Raytheon Dragonfly Sonar/GPS was also added. 2 new bilge pumps were also fitted.
She is now used as a harbour launch and picnic boat and is much admired by all who see her.
I bought a 4 wheel ‘DeGraffe’ boat trailer and towed her back to my shed in the Autumn 2016. Since then we have replaced the centre aft window in the cabin with a bespoke hinged, window allowing easier access to the aft deck. A Lewmar electric anchor winch was also installed. The varnish work, although in good condition was rubbed down and further coats applied.
Sadly, I feel that my boating days are over, so reluctantly I am looking for a new owner for Jemima.
