Renowned as excellent sea boats the Miller Fifer 33 was an evolution of the traditional fishing boats the Millers yard in St. Monan's built its reputation on. Original designed and built to keep the yards tradesman busy in quiet periods demand for the boats grew steadily until they were for the time in mass production. Massively overbuilt the hulls are heavy and fitted out with overbuilt joinery work as you may expect.
Of the later stepped sheerline design KATE OF RHU is more pleasing on the eye than the early versions of the design. Finished to a more yacht like standard the living space has considerably more volume over the earlier version as well. The current owner has made some considerable improvements to the boat during his ownership however she is in need of some TLC before being launched. Currently ashore under a full cover the boat is available for viewing by appointment.

Built by a long established Scottish yard which built its reputation with the production of commerical fishing and cargo carrying craft. The Miller Fifer 33's were heavily built in comparison to other craft of this size and they proved very capable sea boats.
- Carvel planked, canoe sterned, round bilge with full length keel.
- Larch planking below the waterline and Mahogany planking above.
- Oak frames and structural timber, including wood keel.
- Skeg hung steel rudder, rudder stock replaced 2004.
- Internal pig iron type ballast. Keel bolts drawn and replaced with new galvanised items in 2006
- Top strake replaced forward, port and starboard.
- Rubbing strake replaced in oak during winter 2014/15.
- Oak carlings and deck beams.
- Plywood subdeck with teak laid deck on top.
- Coachroof and cockpit constructed in mahogany.

The vendor advises that the hull will require some re-caulking prior to launching. On deck the margin boards and bulwarks will require some renovation.

Of the more attractive stepped sheerline design the coachroof extends aft from the elevated foredeck to the wheelhouse. Decks are of a traditional laid construction with varnished margin boards. Cast iron stanchions support guardwires running the length of the boat with painted stainless steel pushpit. Side decks are of a generous width and run aft to the cockpit coamings before narrowing.
The cockpit is of a traditional style with bench type seats port and starboard. the sole has been replaced during the current ownership and GRP sheathed, now self draining. Lockers are provided beneath the seating with access to the steering gear via an opening hatch aft.

Below decks the boat is finished in the traditional style you would expect with all joinery work of substantial dimensions and finished in varnish type coating. Where visible the hull planking and structural timbers are painted out in white gloss.
Forepeak - Two single berths in the traditional V-berth type configuration, both berths are relatively high up to maximise the usable beam. Storage is provided beneath the bunks. Access to the chain locker is via a small opening door in the forward bulkhead. A folding access ladder stores on the deck allowing access to and from the cabin via the large opening deck hatch. Portlights in the topsides port and starboard provide additional ventilation.
Saloon - Bench settee type seating along port side, converts to large single bunk when required. Storage provided beneath. Folding table with fore and aft seating provided on starboard side. Table top drops down to create small double berth when required. Storage provided beneath seating and overhead outboard.
Galley - Compact galley to starboard side of companionway. Timber constructed units with formica worktop. Stainless steel sink let into worktop. Space for gimballed cooker with oven, no cooker currently fitted. Storage in units beneath worktop and outboard.
Heads - Port side of companionway. Separate compartment with door. Forward facing marine toilet. Porcelain sink mounted on forward bulkhead. Storage lockers outboard.
Wheelhouse - Large wheelhouse with full 360 vision. Helm station to starboard side with fold out seat. Bench style seating to port. Storage beneath seating and outboard of helm station. Clear away rotation windscreens port and starboard, sliding door providing access to cockpit.

The boats wiring for the engine,charging and battery management systems was completely replaced in 2002. Batteries are switched via a rotary switch which allows either bank to be used for either domestic or engine starting purposes.
