Colin Archer inspired gaff ketch known as the Vilisar Class, designed by William Atkin who also designed Knox-Johnston's Suhali, a slightly smaller version of the Vilisar but virtually identical. William Atkins ‘Vilisar Class’ Gaff Ketch Devon £39,500
Colin Archer type gaff ketch designed by William Atkin and built by Jack Bracket of LA, California, in 1960.
Atkin was the designer of Sir Robin Knox Johnston’s famous Suhali, known as the Eric Class, in which he became the first man to complete a non-stop solo circumnavigation from1965 to 1967. The Vilisar is very similar to the Eric the only difference being slightly larger dimensions to increase the internal volume.
The design was inspired by the sailing lifeboats of Norway, of course drawn by the famous Colin Archer, and because of this she is a terrific sea boat and has been proved so by many owners throughout the years. Her long keel, rounded stem and canoe stern with a stern post hung curved rudder are all hallmarks of the Norwegian designer. Although not a race boat, she is no slouch with a steady breeze, and has won several classic regattas in her present ownership.
Her voyaging record is as distinguished as any boat with at least two circumnavigations under her keel and a trans-Atlantic crossing, she has proven herself beyond doubt to be a competent and safe blue water cruising yacht.
She first arrived in the UK from America in 1980. The English owner settled in Falmouth with his family and set up a joinery shop before he asked Wooden Ships to find a new owner for the boat. They had spent the previous few years cruising extensively in warm waters and only the children’s education brought them back home.
Her present owners have cruised her as a family and have lived aboard for months at a time.
She was featured on the cover of Classic Boat magazine in 1990, a copy of which is available along with a 2013 survey.
Spring refit just finished which has involved a lot of cosemtic tidying plus a thorough engine service, complete rig check and replacement or service of all seacocks.
Length on Deck 35’6”
Planked in 1.25” Douglas Fir fastened with A4 stainless steel screws to laminated frames. A major refit carried out between 1998-2000 at Clare Lallows yard on the Isle of Wight included complete re-framing of the hull with all new fastenings. A few planks were replaced at the same time and a full photographic documentation of this work is available.
The entire hull was then sheathed with 3 layers of epoxy glass cloth, 4 layers below the waterline, to create a completely watertight, strong and robust structure.
External Iron ballast keel of 2700lbs fastened with steel keel bolts, new in 2000.
Steel strap floors with iron floor bolts, all new in 2000. Keel bolts are fastened through the strap floors.
The hull is reinforced with a heavy beamshelf and clamp to create a girder effect along the top of the hull. There is also a large bilge stringer composed of three separate planks, all through bolted in the hull and frames to give an enormous amount of strength to the hull.

Deck is straight laid pine over a marine plywood subdeck, now sheathed externally with epoxy cloth and finished in cream deck paint, newly painted 2016
Mahogany coachroof coamings painted white with 4 round bronze portholes each side. Epoxy sheathed marine plywood coachroof deck finished in cream with an oiled Iroko rubbing strake around the top edge of the coamings. All newly painted 2016.
Self draining cockpit built new in 2006 from Iroko framing with T&G Iroko panelled sides. Large thwarts either side with access to a deep locker on the port side and a bridge deck forward. T&G Iroko coamings with a heavy capping rail, all with a durable oiled finish. Starboard offset sliding hatch gives access to the cabin. Sprayhood (2012) over the coachroof and dodgers on the guard rails make the cockpit a safe and sheltered area. Tiller steering to heavy stern hung rudder, new 2012.
Large side decks mainly due to the generous beam this sort of design affords, with a small bulwark set on galvanised steel mounts with an oiled capping rail. Small bronze stanchions bolted to the capping rail make her a very safe working platform.
Bowsprit mounted on the centre line with twin galvanised chain rollers and an Edson bronze 2 speed chain and warp manual windlass. Bronze mooring hawse’s in the bulwark.
New forehatch made in Iroko to ease access to the forecabin.
American style oak boom gallows with bronze fittings and stainless uprights over the aft part of the coachroof. Small aft deck area with bronze mooring hawse’s and cleats.
All deck fittings re-galvanised 2011/12
An unusual rig rarely seen in Europe but popular in america. Fundamentally a cutter headed gaff ketch except that she has a bermudan mizzen. This set up makes a very efficient and manageable rig, previous owners reported that she can be easily sailed with the tiller lashed amidships, controlled simply by sheeting the mizzen in and out, and the present owners have often sailed her single handed.
For heavy weather sailing, a combination of the boomed staysail and mizzen will allow her to make adequate ground to windward without stressing the ship or crew.
Keel stepped solid wood pole masts with varnish wooden booms and gaff yard. New bowsprit 2010. All spars newly varnished 2016.
All mast fittings re-galvanised 2011/12
Stainless steel standing rigging to galvanised rigging screws and internal galvanised chainplates. Standing rigging all new in over-spec wire by Spencer in 1999. A recent survey carried out on the rig states that all is in good condition and rather over engineered for the size of the vessel.
Single lower and single cap shroud on the main.
Pair of cap shrouds on the mizzen mast.
Single inner forestay to the stemhead.
Outer forestay with Wykham Martin reefing gear to the bowsprit end.
Running mainmast backstays with 4:1 block and tackle tensioners.
Boomed staysail, hanked to the inner forestay, mounts on a galvanised fitting on the stemhead.

2 x 115ah deep cycle 12volt batteries for engine starting and domestic supply. Charged from engine alternator.
30 gallon stainless steel fuel tank installed new in 2013 under the starboard quarter berth.
40 gallon plastic water tank installed in 1999, located under the bridge deck. Foot pumps in heads and galley.
Plastic jerry cans carries for spare fuel and water.
Accommodation 6 berths
Steps down in to the cabin with a good sized galley to port. Gimballed Taylors 2 burner paraffin stove with oven and a 5 gallon tank. Single stainless sink gravity drains overboard.
Ample storage behind the galley under the deckhead.
Chart desk to starboard with chart storage under. Sounder, GPS, VHF and switchboard at the chart desk.
Full length quarter berth aft of the chart desk on the starboard side.
Centreline drop leaf solid oak table provides seating for a total of 8. Comfortable seating for 5 with the starboard leaf down which allows easy access fore and aft through the boat.
U-shaped settee berth on the port side converts to a large double. Single settee berth on the starboard side is a good sea berth.
Heads compartment forward of the saloon to port with a Blakes Lavac sea toilet and hand basin.
Door offset to starboard going forward to the forecabin with twin V-berths. Standing headroom under the forehatch.
Taylors paraffin cabin heater on the forward bulkhead with a dedicated 5 gallon tank.
