If you want the look and feel of a classic wooden yacht of the highest pedigree, coupled with the maintenance advantages and ease of a modern rig, WRAITH could be the perfect boat. As you step aboard it will be immediately clear she is maintained at the highest level.
Designed by Norman G. Owens of Owens Boatworks in Baltimore, Maryland; Owens built 41 of these remarkable cutters in house before selling the rights to the Henry R. Hinckley Co.. The Hinckley 40 Cutter went on to be one of the most beautiful and best performing sailing yachts that Hinckley built during the 50's before shifting to the new fiberglass construction.
Built in 1955, WRAITH's hull is double planked mahogany over white oak frames and her decks are teak laminated over a plywood sub-deck. In 2004-2006 she underwent a major restoration including replacement of all underwater hull planking with an inner layer of Okume plywood and an outer layer of Philippine Mahogany. During this time, 50 of her oak frames were either replaced or sistered with new laminated frames. Her structural bronze fasteners, including the ballast bolts, wooden floor bolts and plank fastenings were replaced. Since then, WRAITH has been maintained at the highest standards, many of her systems have been upgraded and improved, and her sail inventory has been updated with a new suit of classically narrow paneled sails.
WRAITH features a low-maintenance aluminum rig that has been optimized for both single handed sailing as well as competing in classic yacht races. In recent years she has competed in the famed Opera House Cup, Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta and Newport Classic Yacht Regatta.
She is truly a remarkable yacht, as detailed in a thorough and highly complimentary survey which is available upon request.
