Bunker and Ellis Story
"Before building custom boats, Ralph Ellis made a living, as many did during the early 1900s on the coast of Maine, fishing and captaining boats for summer residents. But his life would change one night during a fateful game of pool at Jim’s Place, in Southwest Harbor. Ralph Ellis and Raymond Bunker were at the pool table, passing time and conversing about small town issues. It is said that Raymond made the statement, “If I had a place to build a boat, I would do so instead of wasting my time playing pool.” Ralph replied, “I have a shop, but I know very little about building a boat. If you wish, I will put my shop up against your know-how.” That is all it took. As of that day, they were in a partnership that lasted for over 30 years.
Of the boats that were produced by Bunker and Ellis, most are still turning heads throughout the eastern seaboard. The beautiful lines and custom finish work in teak and mahogany are respected and copied by many custom boat builders. Building only a few boats a year, their work was immaculate. The Grayling Story
"Grayling", her original name, was more recently known as "Pemetic" and previously "Argo". She is a 1954 Bunker & Ellis single screw picnic boat brought to us for restoration after sitting outside but covered for several years. This is the second B&E to be restored by us for the same owner with a passion for resurrecting these rare and beautiful yachts. His intention when buying "Grayling" was to conserve and restore her and to sell her upon completion. The process is now finished and "Grayling" is about to seek a new home.
"Grayling" was officially launched on September 14, 2015 and her sea trials went well, including a brief overnight cruise Down East. She is currently wintering in inside storage at our yard, where we are completing a few more finishing touches." ~ Johanson Boatworks
Deck and Hull
"We extended the deck house roof by 12”; this added a little more room in the wheelhouse but, more important, it makes Grayling’s profile even more aesthetically pleasing to anyone looking on. As the topsides seams had been “expressed” some years ago, we splined them as well as repairing and refastening them where needed before applying a high quality marine finish. The stem bolts in the bow of the boat were replaced and a few planks scarfed in along the bottom and refastened as needed.
A pair of custom seats for the helmsman and passenger were fabricated from mahogany, varnished and installed. The side and bow decks were stripped and repaired where needed. Then 5 mil marine plywood was applied with epoxy and overlaid with 8 oz. fiberglass. They were faired and refinished with nonskid added to Awlgrip. The fiberglass skin covering the deck house was removed and replaced. In the cockpit, the original fuel tank in the stern was under a bench that provided seating for guests. It was removed and two new custom tanks were fabricated and installed below the cockpit sole, one on each side, forward of the stern and interconnected to maintain proper trim at all fuel levels. This has doubled Grayling’s fuel capacity and, with the new diesel, extended her cruising range even more. A custom bench seat, complete with lockers and scuppers, now uses the old fuel tank space. It provides dry storage and comfortable seating aft." ~ Johanson Boatworks

"Exterior finish: All the exterior woodwork was stripped and varnished to a very high quality finish. The hull was painted white, the bottom green and the boot stripe classic B&E black. "Cruising Grayling from Maine to Jamestown this spring, we burned 90 gallons over 225 miles, or 2.5 miles/gallon – at 12.5 knots. Which is a very happy cruising speed on long passages. Quiet, bow not up much and very sea kindly. “Flank speed” is about 20.5 knots @4000 rpm and fast cruise is about 16 knots @ 3300. Max sustained rpms, according to the Yanmar manual, is 3600. I usually like where I am, so 12 – 14 K is fine with me!" ~ Doc Clarke owner of Grayling

In 2015 she had a Blue Seas AC/DC System installed, with a charger and inverter. All lighting, both on deck and below, were replaced by LED's, and new wiring was put in.

"The old cabin floor was replaced with a new red birch varnished sole. All interior paint was stripped and refinished and all varnished doors, drawer faces and trim as well. As you step down in to Grayling, you have the galley to your port. It features a new Seafrost electric refrigeration unit. It was added to the original icebox and the old kerosene stove was replaced with a new ENO propane 2-burner stove with oven. The galley also has a double basin stainless steel sink, with storage outboard and below the stove and sink.
