Designed by Norman Owens of Owens Boat builders in Maryland sometime in the early 1940s’. Owens Boat Builders produced about 40 of these cutter designs as a sleek, fast Bay racer. The Owens family was primarily a power boat builder and the three brothers decided in the late 40s’ to discontinue building the cutter. They offered the plans to Hinckley who continued to build 14 of the cutter through the 50’ until they started the Bill Trip design, Bermuda 40. Hinckley built only 4 with what Henry called “the Doghouse” or the hard mahogany dodger.
There were 7 owners before the current including the University of New Hampshire, a racing syndicate and an ocean sailor who raced “Spar Hawk” in the Newport to Bermuda race taking second in class. How Desperado got to the Chesapeake and why it stayed here is a whole different story.
Purchased in 2002 2 years was spent restoring Desperado to its almost new status. Desperado has raced competitively in many FBYC series races, taking First place in the 2006 Long Distance Race series, First in Fleet 2009, Second in Fleet in 2008 and First in Fleet in 2012 at the Turkey Shoot Hospice Regatta and are three time winners of the “Beautiful Boat” award at Turkey Shoot. Desperado has sailed the Atlantic twice since the rebuild on Delmarva Circum-Navigation trips.
