Rinker 282 Captiva Bowrider Captain's Report
Mother of All Bowriders
No doubt we all know that most boats are compromises; a little of this in case we want to do that and a little of that in case we want to do this. And anyone who has done the boat show tours can tell you how the salesmen will tell you whatever model you are looking at will do all the things you want, including the ones your wife wants and ones you haven't even thought of yet!
Well, welcome to Rinker’s 282 Captiva Bowrider. You say 29 feet on a bowrider? Aren’t bowriders those small boats for the younger set to blast around the lake? Who would want one this large? How about you older guys who still like to blast around the lake, but want to do it in comfort and style? This is the mother of all bow riders and may be the boat you really want. You don’t sleep aboard, but you get there fast. 200 miles a day cruising is no problem and the hotel rooms are fantastic!
The 282 is powered by a 6.2 liter Mercruiser, 320 HP engine with a Bravo 3 outdrive. Our tests got it up to 45 MPH with a little playing with the trim. The boat is sensitive to trim. Nevertheless, it still has enough power to rocket three couples down the waterway at 35 MPH all day in relative comfort.
The bowrider portion of the boat is much more than that. It is quite comfortable with its U-shaped seating, stereo speakers and more than enough drink holders. The anchor is mounted on a roller at the bow and the windlass is controlled at the helmsman station, making for little human intervention while deploying or retrieving the anchor. There is excellent under seat storage and the forward area features cushion insets that make the entire area a sun deck at seat height. The setup is quite comfortable. And if you wish to have snacks at anchor, there is a table that mounts in the middle of the bowrider area.
Heading aft through the walk through windshield brings you to helmsman station on the starboard side. The automobile-type console has all switches and gauges within easy sight and reach, including the VHF radio and the stereo system. In the middle of the instrument pod is a real compass, something that should be on every boat no matter what water you are in. The seats are comfortable, swivel and move fore and aft. They have large bolsters for seating height adjustment.
In the center of the walkthough sole, there are two large lockers for skis, wakeboards and associated gear. The lockers have drains into the bilge.
Opposite the helm station is a –gasp- real marine head! The area is small, but very accessible. Seldom do you see a head on a bowrider, but this touch will be appreciated by the ladies.
Aft of the helm console, are two mini-consoles on each side. The starboard side contains a sink with pressure water and a small refrigerator with freezer. Not large, but certainly enough for the day trip. On the opposite side is more storage with a large garbage can on top. And on every side are more bench seats and more drink holders.
There is a walkthrough on the port side of the engine deck to the very large swim platform. The swim ladder is molded into the platform, an extremely nice Rinker touch. In the walkthrough there are the electrical controls with both 12 volt and 110 volt plugs throughout the area.
And if there weren’t enough very comfortable seats, there is a reverse facing triple seat behind the engine deck. Certainly, you wouldn’t want guests sitting here at speed, but it’s a great location to watch others swim while you sun yourself. And if this isn’t enough in the way of creature comforts, there is a remote control for the stereo within reach of the rear deck along with a washdown shower when you come up the ladder.
This is an ideal boat for those who like to boat like they did in their youth, but don’t want to give up the creature comforts. This is a very classy package that will take you and 10 of your friends anywhere you want to go in style.
