While buying a boat, people often wonder whether or not they should register their boat with the state or if they should document the boat with the US Coast Guard. What makes sense for you?

Documentation	It may be required if your boat is financed If you are planning on traveling outside of the US and Territorial Waters. There are no registration stickers required on the boat; only the hailing port and name are needed There is a one-time expense; no fees are required during renewal (unless you move or change names)
Registration	If you are not planning on leaving the state regularly There is a smaller fee up front, yet fees continue yearly System is similar to registering a car
