December 2006:
The Prinz 54 Coupé is nearing completion.
At the manufacturing plant the first hulls which are now completed with the latest technology using epoxy resin infusion, are already lifted out of the hull mould.
The deck plug construction is finished and prepared to make the deck mould.
The design brief was to make a high performance 54 feet + boat built around Volvos IPS system. The way to achieve that is to keep the weight down, so the whole boat is manufactured using epoxy resin infusion, as opposed to the traditional lay-up in polyester resins.
The way it works is that you have an outside and inside layer of epoxy and fibreglass matting, with a layer of open cell foam in between. The whole lot is then covered with a big polythene sack and epoxy resin is sucked through the whole structure, and then heated to cure it. The result is a sandwich construction about an inch thick, but all bonded together in one lump with super strong epoxy. Its stronger than polyester, and about half the weight.
This lightweight hull then allows the use of IPS 600, based on D6 engines instead of the usual D12 which again saves more weight.
The interior partitions are also made up of lightweight composites.
