A Most Enchanting Express Cruiser
When American Marine of Singapore added the Eastbay range of express cruisers to its now classic Grand Banks trawler line, it was signaling the arrival of a new seafaring philosophy

EB49 Fast Cruiser When American Marine of Singapore added the Eastbay range of express cruisers to its now classic Grand Banks trawler line, it was signaling the arrival of a new seafaring philosophy based on fast planing bottoms designed by Ray Hunt and flexible interiors. Plus, of course, all of the other elements that have made the yard such a success through the years: robust construction, top class teak finishes, full gear, and, most importantly, highly unusual lines. At 15.5 meters in length, the Eastbay 49 Hard-Top Express simply brims with personality. Its elegant lines, with a low, glassed-in deck house, are timeless and well-proportioned. The cockpit is divided into two sections. The aft one above the swimming platform (with hot and cold shower, by the way) is completely clear and uncluttered apart from a sofa and, thanks to its low sides, is perfect for all kinds of fishing. The central section is higher and covered by a hardtop. It is devoted to communal life, being furnished with a large L-shaped sofa, table, and fridge-bar with ice-maker. The starboard bridge has a beautiful hand-carved wheel, a real work of art in its own right, and is served by a double sofa whose twin faces the sea. The central part of the windshield opens to allow extra air circulation. This is further guaranteed by two skylights in the deck house roof and three others in the cabins.

The yard offers a range of roomy interior layouts to satisfy various needs. The standard version emphasizes the quality and roominess of the spaces rather than the number of berths. It is perfect for two couples seeking maximum comfort. The central saloon includes a conversation-dining area with a horseshoe-shaped sofa and an extendible table. This faces a U-shaped galley which is not only very well-equipped, but also boasts a whole host of cupboards for storing china, pots and pans and general foodstuffs. There is even a built-in television set and bookshelves. There are two very impressive, beautifully finished cabins, both with very spacious closets (with louvered doors for better air circulation) and lots of drawer and shelf space. The owner's stateroom is situated forward and has its own large bathroom with shower. The other guest cabin is furnished with twin beds and also has a private bathroom. There is even a washer-dryer in the passage beside the latter. The cockpit provides access to an enormous peak while the engine room is situated beneath the steering position. It houses twin 660-hp Caterpillar engines, with shrouded propellers to reduce the draught. These push the boat up to a top speed of 30 knots. If two 435-hp Caterpillar diesels are installed, then the speed falls to 30 knots. While the East Bay's lines are very classic-looking, the plants are about as modern as you'll get. Every last safety detail has also been carefully thought out and has seen the inclusion of a host of features, such as a solid handrail that surrounds the whole deck, nice wide gangways, and excellently distributed lifelines. In addition to this the engine compartment is beautifully ventilated and superbly sound-proofed. The onboard gear and equipment include air-conditioning with heating on the reverse cycle, a 12-kW generator, vacuum flush heads and an electric dual-control anchor winch.
