HANK HALSTED:President of Newport Office & Sales Broker

EXPERIENCE:
Hank Halsted has been a sailor virtually all his life. In fact, the day he was born his mother had to be rowed ashore from the family cruising boat and taken to the hospital! After years as a professional captain of yachts of all descriptions on both sides of the Atlantic, in 1982 Hank went to work as Service Manager for Hinckley Yachts in S.W. Harbor, Maine. From 1983 until 1995 he managed Hinckley Yacht Brokerage, then moved to Newport, RI as a partner in Hinckley Newport and Hinckley Marine Insurance. When the Hinckley Company sold in 1997, Hank and his partner, Bruce Leffers, purchased Northrop & Johnson, Newport. Hank has enjoyed a good measure of success as an offshore sailor, winning the Bermuda 1-2 single handed race from Newport to Bermuda and doublehanded return, in 1989 and again in 1991. He has participated as captain or navigator in 17 Newport-Bermuda races (6 doublehanded), eight Marblehead-Halifax races, winning the 1998 IMS division as Navigator and a myriad of other offshore events. It might be said that the offshore environment is deep in his comfort zone.

A member of the Storm Trysail Club, Cruising Club of America and the New York Yacht Club, Hank has also been deeply involved in the professional development of yachting. He served as President of the Yacht Architects and Brokers Association from 1991-93 and on the Board of Directors 1989-2003. He is also a founding board member of the International Yacht Council, a global network of leading yacht brokerage firms and Associations. Between 1981 and 1991, Hank published over 100 articles on boat handling and seamanship in a monthly column in Motorboating and Sailing Magazine, as well as Yachting, Cruising World and Passage Maker. He served for 20 years as an offshore safety inspector for the Marion Bermuda Race and Newport Bermuda Race, and presently is Co-Chairman of the Qualifications Committee for the Newport Bermuda Race.

Hank is also the managing partner of the Newport and St. Barths Bucket Regattas, sailing events for yachts over 100', where he has also served as racing helmsman for the 131' Ketch, VICTORIA OF STRATHEARN, 152' Perini Navi ANDROMEDA La Dea, 148' Perini Navi HELIOS and the Swan 112' HIGHLAND BREEZE.

Hank is pleased to share his wealth of experience regarding yachts, the offshore environment and the intricacies of the marine industry with his clients; the vast majority of whom, become close friends.

BRIAN COMMETTE:Sales Broker

EXPERIENCE:
Brian Commette grew up in the boatbuilding town of Bristol, RI where his first paying job was in a boatyard. Family sports included sailing and skiing. With his brothers he raced a 23' keelboat. The family later cruised New England in a larger wooden yawl. Living near the water, it was as important to have a skiff with an outboard motor as it was to have a bicycle. While in college, summers were spent working in a local boatyard. Winters gave an opportunity for competitive skiing with some success. By junior year, Commette was nationally ranked in Nordic competition (cross-country and ski jumping). Following college, the career track defaulted back into boatyards with some management responsibilities.

He learned a competence with all of the trades: mechanical, fiberglass, rigging and electrical. It was an easy transition to yacht brokerage. During his twenty-five years in yacht brokerage with Northrop & Johnson, Commette has served as both as board member and president of the Yacht Brokers Association of America (YBAA). He has also worked tirelessly with the Certified Professional Yacht Broker program, serving as Chairman and now in the position Of Counsel. His professionalism and his knowledge of yachts and their systems has proven to be of great value to his loyal clients.

JONATHAN CHAPMAN:Sales Broker

EXPERIENCE:
Jonathan Chapman was born and raised in Woolwich, Maine across from the shipbuilding city of Bath. He developed a love for yachting at an early age while growing up and cruising on the coast with his family. While at Wheaton College he spent summers working as dockmaster and launch operator at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club in Maine, and at the New York Yacht Club in Newport, Rhode Island. He frequently raced in local PHRF and one design fleets during these years, and developed an intense interest in early wooden craft. Attending the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, Maine he built himself a Nutshell Pram, which has lead to numerous other projects including assisting with the restoration of "PATRIOT", his 1959 Hodgdon Brothers runabout.

After graduating from Wheaton he spent the next few years employed as mate aboard several motor yachts, both private and charter, cruising the waters of the east and west coasts of the United States, the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, and the Netherlands. These experiences have provided Jonathan with a first hand knowledge about many aspects of yachting, from vessel servicing to their operation and business management. He began in the yacht brokerage and sales business in 1999 working for a Massachusetts based company which sold and brokered a number of quality production sail and powerboat lines. Having a desire to deal more exclusively with classic, traditional and unique contemporary yachts, Jonathan moved on to work with the well respected firms of Bartram & Brakenhoff in 2001, and International Yacht Collection in 2004, before joining the team of "Gentlemen Brokers" at Northrop & Johnson.

He brings expansive medium and large yacht knowledge to both the firm and his clients, and continues to focus on both sales and charter in these markets world wide. Jonathan has earned a reputation for honesty and integrity, and for going the extra mile for his clients. He is a Florida licensed broker, an active member of YBAA (Yacht Brokers Association of America) and FYBA (Florida Yacht Brokers Association), earned his CPYB (Certified Professional Yacht Broker) designation in 2005, is a member of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club in Maine, and a licensed captain.

MICHAEL GERAGHTY:Sales Broker

EXPERIENCE:
Michael J. Geraghty was born and raised in Amityville on the south shore of Long Island N.Y. Michael was one of the youngest members of Narrasketuck Yacht Club and began racing sailboats and operating power boats before his seventh birthday. The second child of six for Marylynne and Joseph Geraghty he quickly talked the whole family into joining the local club. While attending S.U.N.Y. Maritime College Michael enjoyed racing and helped the team to second in the nation, which is still the schools best year.

The tropics were all too tempting, so off he went on his first delivery South to St. Thomas. Michael enjoyed over a decade of deliveries and charters captaining large power and sailing yachts. Michael moved to Rhode Island in 1990, and has two lovely children Peter (21) and Ana (19). In the process of switching from captain to land worked for Defender Industries as Director of Sales, managed three stores for West Marine and completed district manager training; was a rigger, hydraulic trailer and travel lift operator for Jamestown boat yard, and began yacht sales and brokerage in Newport. When not at the helm, playing guitar or surfing, Michael is an integral part of Northrop & Johnson - because the company offers what he believes in and lives by; enthusiasm, integrity, value and experience.

With over 300 employees today, Bullhorn became and remains the largest producer of recruiting and staffing software in the world and was sold in 2012 to a private equity firm. This particular business experience enables Barry to relate directly with many entrepreneurial clients seeking guidance in the marine industry.

JOHN BOONE:Sales Broker

EXPERIENCE:
John's maritime career began in the mid 80's at Allen's Rigging, USVI after being raised in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay area and summers on Swan's Island, Maine. By 1997, John became the go to man for the growing Superyacht rigging market with Swedish company Riggarna, manufacturing SS Rod rigging along with the early advancements of composite rigging. He was also US representative for Reckmann, specializing in hydraulic sail handling systems. During this time John's passion was grand prix racing, winning prestigious regatta's from Annapolis, Newport, Florida's SORC to Hawaii's Kenwood Cup classics and beyond. To date he has over 35,000+ ocean miles under his belt.

In 1998 Bristol, RI boat builder Eric Goetz recruited John. From there on he became knowledgeable in Hi-Tech composite yacht construction and sold 25 new custom builds for European and American clients. During his Goetz tenure he was involved in developing the TP52 Class, adding 12 custom boats to the International fleet.

After Goetz Custom Boats he started in brokerage as buyer's agent for two racing clients - he successfully closed a Westport 112' and a 70' custom downeast motor yacht. He then became the Captain for the buyer's family.

Now living ashore in Tiverton, RI with his wife Kellie and their baby, joining the Northrop & Johnson team seemed like a perfect fit. With vast marine industry experience, contacts and attention to detail John is looking forward to nurture his relationships with the many longtime clients.
