For the past 15 years, Pacific Asian Enterprises, Inc. (PAE) has devoted its efforts toward the development of the Nordhavn line of offshore passagemaking trawlers. Endeavors such as the Around-The-World voyage in a Nordhavn 40 and the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally, combined with innovative design ideas have set PAE atop this growing industry. However the roots of the successful blue water power yacht franchise actually lie under an impressive sailing legacy that saw the construction of over 250 cruising sailboats. PAE’s Mason line was first introduced in 1979 and models ranged from 34 to 64 feet.

PAE’s interest in sail has been rekindled with their latest design: a motorsailer that will have true Nordhavn capabilities with transoceanic range under power alone and modest sailing performance in offshore conditions.

Originally designed at 50 feet, market feedback and continued development propelled it into a rugged 56-footer that will displace over 70,000 lbs. and carry 750 gallons of fuel. Powered by the proven Lugger 1066 T diesel engine, a top cruising speed of 9 knots will be possible. The rugged Lugger will drive a 36-inch four-bladed controllable pitch Hundested propeller and will offer unparalleled flexibility of operation. When conditions dictate, the propeller can be fully feathered to enhance sailing performance. Alternatively, the engine can be run at very low rpm and high propeller pitch combined with the drive and stabilizing force of the sails, which together will provide an astounding level of comfort, economy and capability.

This motorsailer provides a trawler-style aft deck with a sailing cockpit and steering station forward of the saloon/wheelhouse. Access to the forward sailing cockpit is via wide side decks on the port and starboard side of the saloon/wheelhouse. Powered main and headsail furlers along with power winches will make sail handling a manageable affair for short-handed crews. A 10-foot RIB can be accommodated athwartships atop the saloon/wheelhouse roof and a power winch is standard for launching.
Surrounded by rugged half-inch tempered glass windows, the saloon/wheelhouse offers unrestricted 360-degree views providing an ideal steering navigation station for the captain. The cushy wraparound settee to starboard provides a comfortable dining area and two reclining chairs to port are perfect for guests to lounge and take in the scenery.

Going below via a gentle stairway, a large, well-ventilated and lighted galley offers abundant counter top space and cabinet storage as well as refrigerator and freezer space. Luxurious master and guest staterooms are separated by the galley and the full stand-up engine room. Additionally, space is provided for a washer/dryer and tool and spare parts storage.

This new motorsailer will feature the world class fit and finish Nordhavns are known for and will include superb electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems that are a result of PAE’s vast offshore experience.

Typical of the Nordhavn line, the motorsailer will include the finest equipment and interior styling.

Nordhavn has taken what it does best, building long-range luxury expedition yachts, and incorporated all the fishing features and rigging found on tournament sportfishers to create a yacht that can truly go after any fish in the world. An enormous fishing cockpit, dual 60-gallon bait wells, a 35-cubic-foot deep freeze, plentiful gear and tackle storage and all the rod holders and rigging a deep-sea angler could ever want top a long list of fishing features.

The N75 EYF is safer in rough weather when sea conditions force a slower running speed, which is always a major downside to the typical small rudders found on sportfishers (the N75 EYF’s standard stabilizers also promise a comfortable ride in rough seas). Additionally, the EYF’s 22 -foot four-inch beam permits a new Nordhavn standard feature: twin engines. A single screw is not an option. The N75 EYF sports MTU Series 60 diesels and a cruising-speed fuel burn of 12 to 15 gallons per hour – a trickle compared to a typical sportfisher built for nothing but speed with noisy behemoth diesels guzzling 100 to 200 gallons or more per hour. Another heavy advantage over typical sportfishers is there is no weight penalty for all the equipment and furnishings that make life grand. The Nordhavn 63 is yet another iteration of one of our most proven hull forms, the Nordhavn 55. Due to its performance and interior layout capabilities, the N55 has fast become one of the most popular, and one of the most tested models we’ve produced. We designed the 60-foot version of the N55 platform to meet owners’ demands for increased space.

The new 63 is actually an aft wheelhouse version of the N60 and its extended cockpit and boat deck. Looks-wise, however, the new model retains the same salty feel that popularized the Nordhavn 62. For those who love the N62 but have a width restriction at their slip, the N63 may be the perfect choice with its 18-foot beam. One of P.A.E.’s greatest qualities is the ability of our Chief of Design, Jeff Leishman, and his engineering staff to continually conceive, design and introduce exciting new models.

While the 63 shares the same hull as the N55/60 designs, an entire new deck and engine room mold have been created for it, providing increased interior volume and added amenities.

For instance, just forward of the engine room door on the 55/60 sits the utility room with washer/dryer and freezer. On the 63, this area has been expanded to also include a crew quarters to port with fixed berth and pipe berth at forward end. Another layout change is the centerline guest stateroom and four large opening port lights, both of which come standard.

Perhaps the greatest attribute of the N63 will be realized stepping through the cockpit door. Not only will this boat be incredibly spacious, it will exude luxury. Standard on the 63 will be the same raised paneled cherry wood that was ordered on hull #1 of the Expedition Yachtfisher. And in the galley will be a V700 Series Subzero refrigerator and freezer, as well as a U-Line freezer in the utility room, providing enough stores for extended traveling.

The main salon is larger than both the 55 and 60 and offers two wrapping settees for entertaining with the galley on the same level. A unique hatch alcove on the port side of the Portuguese bridge allows light and air below to the galley; it sits just above the GE stainless steel LPG 4 burner stove and convection/ microwave oven. Like all Nordhavns, granite countertops are beautifully crafted from your selection of our latest array of samples.

Two steps below the main salon you will find the master cabin near amidships on the port side. A walkaround bed facing athwart ships with two large ports creates a light and airy feeling in the cabin. The master head is designed to please the first mate. The space and furnishings in all areas are designed to be as welcoming as they are beautiful.

Opposite the master cabin on the starboard side is the day head which is convenient to the main salon and is complete with shower and opening ports for light and air.

Forward to the bow is the guest cabin which rivals the master cabin with its port lights, a walkaround bed on center line, drawers and cedar lined closets for clothing storage.

A great view all around is provided from the wheel house which is just about the same height as the 55 but aft which gives added protection and that very cool look that has made the 62 such a popular model. A very handy off-watch cabin aft on the same level, keeps crew close to the action if needed and also provides a full head and shower on starboard. Just beyond the pilot house is the open aft lounge deck with full 360 degree access to the Portuguese bridge. Port and starboard control pods on the Portuguese bridge are an option that can be added amidships for ease in docking.

The 63 is powered by the John Deere 6081AFM w/M3 rating of 330 HP @ 2,300 rpm, which is keel cooled to enable a dry stack exhaust. The transmission is an equally bullet proof ZF ZFW320 with a 4 to 1 reduction gear. The Nordhavn 63 has a projected fuel capacity of 2,250 gallons contained in four main tanks and one aluminum “day tank” holding 31 gallons which will gravity feed from main wing tanks and center tank. As with all Nordhavns a range of at least 3,000 nm is projected.

The large open foredeck can support a tender as large as 17 feet and it comes standard with a Steelhead ES 1500 telescoping yacht crane with a 1500-lb. safe working load.

Another design cue taken from the N75 EYF is the updated dry stack which trails aft of the radar platform and forms the support for the dual tracking domes atop the pilot house.

Judging from the interest we have seen on N63, this newest addition to the Nordhavn line is on track to become the next new classic.
