72' Don Brooke Pilothouse Ketch - Proven Blue Water Cruising Yacht
Built in 1978 in New Zealand to a well proven Don Brooke design. Steel hull /alloy superstructure with 185 hp single Detroit Diesel.
Monsoon is a classic sea going sailing yacht, ketch rigged. She is professionally designed and built and well equipped for the most demanding open ocean voyages having made 3 Pacific Ocean crossings. She carries all furling sails, a 185 horsepower marine diesel engine, and twin diesel generators. Monsoon has a pleasant and comfortable interior and plenty of seating in sun and in shade, ample space for sunbathing on the beautiful teak decks.
Monsoon combines the graceful lines of a modern "Philip Rhodes-style" motor sailer with the rugged and sure proven seaworthiness of the most able offshore cruiser. Monsoon is a roomy, seaworthy and sea kindly vessel, designed and equipped for living aboard and extensive cruising in comfort and safety. Apart from the 5 cabins, there are 3 separate living areas (aft deck seating - pilothouse - salon) which can accommodate lots of personal individual space, which is nice in a live aboard situation with a bigger group or family. Space and headroom are essential on a live aboard yacht. She is a big boat, yet she sails like a 50 footer, the sails are not enormous and the furlers easy to operate. The autopilot steers the vessel almost always and one man drops the anchors in the bay.
Monsoon has a sharp bow and a canoe stern. She is round bilged, has a wineglass shape hull with full keel with cutaway forefoot, medium/heavy displacement. 1/4 inch mild steel hull, alloy superstructure and teak decks. Built in New Zealand in 1978 by Kumeu engineering & P. Vos (Interior), she is a custom built ocean cruiser.
Monsoon is ketch rigged, and her mainsail and mizzen sail have the famous NZ Leisure furler. The two head sails are all on Reckmann furlers. Monsoon can be sailed by one couple, and if necessary by one person alone. The current Owner does sail the boat alone every now and then with help from the SIMRAD AP50 autopilot.
The alloy deckhouse galley/salon raises 4 ft above deck offers seating for 8 persons around the dinner table and gives a perfect panoramic view over the sea. All cabins, companionways, salon galley and pilothouse have a headroom of 6'and 6". The delightful semi-enclosed alloy pilothouse standing on deck level, offers seating around a big table for 8 persons with shadow, fresh air, permanent view over all ship system controls and protection against the sea. Aft deck half round / full width stern seating fits as well 8 persons. Lots of sunbathing spaces all around, enormous teak decking.
5 spacious cabins for 10-12 passengers/crew will give the travellers/sailors the feeling of being at home on board of Monsoon. (Two head/showers). Aft there is Air Conditioning and also plenty of natural ventilation. During a day cruise Monsoon could give 20-25 persons pleasure and enjoyment with her good sail performance and spacious accommodations.
After 10 years of cruising, two pacific crossings and a bit of bad weather, we decided to do some modifications to the lay-out of the Monsoon. In seas 6 ft and higher you don't want to be forward of the main mast, because of the motion, unless you're a real seaman, and these are rare. When passage making in rough seas most people prefer to sleep aft so we created a big double and 2 single beds in the captain's cabin and added a pipe birth in the starboard guest cabin opposite of the aft bathroom. In this way creating excellent beds for 5 adults and a few kids during the rough weather passages. This is ample and enough capacity for a "family & friends vessel" like Monsoon, take into account you have always 2 persons on watch, which make a total of 7 adults + few kids.
Original we had 4 bunks and the galley forward of the main mast. We moved galley up into the salon area and made one comfortable double bed in the forward cabin we and created two extra double cabins around the main mast base. See the pictures below. Forward you'll find as well a small bathroom with head, shower, vanity, mirror. During easier passages and the nights in bays and marina's people swarm out over the whole vessel....into the big forward cabin with the big Lewmar hatch: lay in your bed and watch the stars. People move into 2 extra double cabins forward at starboard & port that we created under the main mast, where before we had the galley. People sleep in the pilothouse, in the salon, or in hammocks. In this way you can sleep comfortably 16 persons.
Saloon-galley-dining. (12x14ft). On starboard side is an L- shaped sofa with a dinner table to seat eight persons, on the portside a nice and practical galley with big fridge/freezer, ice maker, 3 burner stove, warm and cold water, microwave, toaster, blender. All around mahogany panelling with various woodcarvings and on the aft bulkhead is the entertainment centre w/Sony TV, DVD, and stereo.
The saloon has a solid half inch teak sole.
The original galley area was altered into 2 x double bedrooms with lockers and bookshelves etc, the starboard one you see here on the picture right of this text block
Three steps lead from the port aft side of the salon up to the raised wheelhouse (12x12ft). This area has a U- shaped lounge seat which gives comfort and seating for 8 persons and has a removable, transparent enclosure. Going further astern on deck level is the second steering position with a semi circle seating area for 8 persons all around the canoe stern
Returning again from the wheelhouse down the hand carved stairway, through the lounge to the aft accommodations - directly to stbd is the guest stateroom with two single berths (and 1 pipe berth above) with drawers under and in between a dressing table with drawers and a large mirror above, there is a large built in bookcase to stbd and hanging lockers with louvered doors forward. Going aft down the companionway to port is a large custom build bathroom with stall shower/bath tub, vanity, head and washing machine.
Going further aft down the companionway is the master stateroom which is the full width of the vessel. It sleeps 4 persons and features one double and one 3/4 berth with drawers under both. Plus another single all the way to stb. Between the bunks is a dressing table with drawers under and a large mirror above. The berths headboards are carved mahogany. A large hanging locker to port , and to stbd is an office desk, bookshelves, the SSB-radio. Drawers underneath.

Mechanical and engine room
Spacious engine room with fast access hatch,12 ft long, is located under the main saloon and enclosed by two bulkheads, has a headroom of 4' 8" and contains on port and starboard sides the fuel tanks each 900 gallons or each 3700 litres diesel;
Total 7300 litres= 1800 US Gallon diesel in 2 tanks.

All these systems are easy accessible and serviceable with excellent access to the engine room.
Main engine is a natural aspirated GM/Detroit Diesel model 6-71, which had Dec 2009: new piston rings and injectors. She will have in March 2011about 6000 hrs on her counter. The main engine rates approx 185 HP (injector type N70) at 1900 rpm and gives a max speed of 10 knots Cruising under power at 1600 rpm the ship will show a speed of approx 8 knots. There are over a 200.000 of these engines around, so parts and service is easy to find.
The Allison hydraulic gearbox is the model is used on engines up to 350 HP, has a reduction from 3 to 1.
The 14 kW KOHLER generator engine is a YANMAR 4-cylinder turbo charged diesel (11,000 hours / Jan 2010), 26HP at 1500 rpm, with an automatic shut off control in case of low oil pressure or high coolant temp. (gauges are in the pilothouse.) Kohler derated this Yanmar diesel which originally produces of the same engine block, pistons and shaft 55 -77 HP at 3600 rpm.
The cooling system for both engines is identical: raw water, via a strainer, passes a salt water/ coolant heat exchanger and is injected in the engine's exhaust pipe and than runs together with the exhaust glasses all the way aft to the stern waterline. Both engines hardly use any lube oil. The main engine has an oil/ coolant/ exhaust gas alarm plus oil pressure, water and exhaust gas temperature and rpm gauges in the pilot house. All exhaust piping and hoses of both engines are complete, from engine to stern, renewed with DUNLOP marine- exhaust flex hose in 1995. Both exhaust lines have vented anti sifons-loopes, and big shut- off valves. There is a steel 100 litre lube oil storage tank and transfer to engine room
Water and pump systems Drinking water from 2x100 gal new epoxy tanks to 40 psi automatic switched pump, with accumulator tank, into ships plumbing system and a special faucet in the galley has a in line carbon filter for excellent drinking water. Vantage Marine water maker (15 gallon per hour) is equipped with flow indicators and U.V sterilizer. (All renewed in 2003) This sterilizer is equipped with filters and is also to be used to make water that's taken in from shore safe drinkable. 2 electric heads, sweet water flushed, all showers and sinks drain in 300 gal waste tank, which has 2 parallel-installed pumps (24V).
The three (forward, engine room and aft) bilge sections have all a separate electrical bilge pumps with alarms and a extra mechanical Jabsco bilge pump system driven from main engine with manual clutch is operated with fast ball valves in engine room. A fifth automatic switched and separately wired bilge pump is a 3700 gall Rule pump. Main engine raw water cooling pump can be operated as emergency bilge pump. When hard comes to hard: Honda gasoline 100 gal/min pump is standby in port wing.
Hundested variable pitch adjuster- wheel is located on starboard side in the companionway aft, is easy accessible and operates smooth. Hundested gear is completely rebuild in 2005.Propeller diameter is3 ft Port and stbd have both a 900 gallon/3650 litre fuel tank with side glasses and interconnection pipe with transfer pump system, with extra Racor filter. The fuel supply to main engine and generator run each via their own Racor fuel filter which are both equipped with a vacuum gauge for control of the quality of the filter-element. Fuel tanks are to be cleaned every 5 years; in 2005/2009.
8 kW Fisher Panda generator engine is a Kubota-3-cilinder diesel 1300 hrs/March 2011), 3000 rpm, with an automatic shut down when overheating or loosing oil pressure.
